No Love for Castrol Syntec?

I buy GC 0w30 whenever it is on sale at Autozone. I use it in place of 0w40 Mobil 1 in my trucks. I like the A3 rating.

Too bad, Autozone doesn't carry Purolators. I have to make a second trip most of the time if I don't have any in stock.

I've kinda been out of the "oil wars" for a while now.

However, around Super Bowl time, IIRC, I heard an ad, claiming Syntec provided "X" amount of protection over Mobil 1.

It was something outlandish, like 7 or 8 times.

What's the scoop on that>?

Oh, I do have fond memories, of that glowing green stuff, though.

Basically put however, I would never use Castrol Syntec, just for all the chain jerkin' they pulled over the years.

Once I realized what Castrol did to the oil industry with wording I stopped using it.I used it for years but did not like being duped on the synthetic issue. Then recently I contacted them over their supposedly REAL synthetic ATF+4. They said it was BETTER then Amsoil and Mobil full synthetic at half the price BUT would not discuss if it was a Group three or Group four base stock.Said it was propriety.I e/mailed them back that AMSOIL doesn't hide their group stock etc.I got no reply.I then ordered two cases of Amsoil Atf+4 for my Dodge truck.

The oil from the superbowl is not Syntech.
Its Castrol's new (to the USA) Edge. Castrol Edge has been around the world for a while. Its a quality oil in other parts of the world. The info on the U.S. version is limited, but the specs and VOAs look very nice. Time will tell with that oil.

Real interesting...especially since Chrysler REQUIRES Group III base oil for any licensed ATF+4, which means Castrol ATF+4 is Group III. And Amsoil doesn't make any ATF+4. They make a universal ATF that they recommend for applications requiring ATF+4 (as well as almost every other ATF under the sun).

Castrol Import Multi Vehicle ATF is the one Castrol product I would use, having seen it perform in friends' transmissions, but not for more than 30k miles on a clean exchange. It seems to work well, but not for extended service.

I concur with many points written by others above on "Why I don't use Castrol."

Yeah but you could run it 5000 miles and then put it in old RP bottles and sell it for $12/qt.

Now you guys got me wondering. I'm running Syntec 5W-20 right now, and going by the OLM (2008 Honda CR-V), the changes have been around 10,000 miles. Only thing I noticed with the Syntec is some clatter when cold; I don't think I was hearing it as much with the Syntec blend I had before. So price aside, is it just not that good?

Dave, the best way to find out is to get a UOA with TBN and see if the oil is up for 10,000 miles in your particular application.

Anything else is speculation.

For me, no compelling reason to use it. Local small box store has GTX for $3.99 USD, Syntec for $5.99 and Citgo Supergard Synblend for $2.19. Maybe not Castrol's fault but....

I'd use GC in a heartbeat if I had an app that could use it

So is it synthetic, or just so hyped super-brew>? How are they marketing it compared to their other oils?

There is not a clear cut distinction anymore between synthetics categorized as Base III vs. Base IV/V (PAO/ester) because very few motor oils these days are 100% PAO.

However, it is generally agreed that Castrol Syntec has very little or no PAO, and that Castrol Edge has some PAO (probably somewhere between 25-50%). So Castrol Edge is definitely better than Castrol Syntec.

Castrol says that Edge is unsurpassed by Mobil 1 EP, which means it is probably about as good, but they do claim it is better than regular M1. But regular M1 is certainly good enough for most applicaitons that require 5000-7500 OCI. M1 EP and Edge are designed to for OCI of 10000 miles and beyond.

Not sure. I would imagine its group III with a shot of IV (like most U.S. synthetics). Castrol has said flat out that Edge is the best oil they have ever made.
With more use and info, we will be able to form a better view on this oil. As of now its to early to tell.
