So the tires the cruze comes with aren't bad. They aren't great, but they can be dealt with until they wear out. The ones on the equinox on the other hand are really pretty horrible. They are 235/55/R19 Hankook Optimo H725. Absolutely no relation to the H727. They are fairly noisy, ride is somewhat smooth but feels floaty and they have really no grip at all. But the worst so far is wet performance. I've never seen a tire perform this horribly in the wet, especially when you consider that it has barely 3,600 miles on them.

They hydroplane like nothing. I'm afraid to let my mom drive them in the winter. But there is a problem. There really are no tires in this size. Our options really are limited to these.

These don't seem to be the best michelins, and are quite pricey at $250 a tire.

And these, which while I don't necessarily dislike Continental (I did get the DWS on the focus after all) these seem like fairly new tires, and haven't really proven themselves yet. Granted it will likely be a few months before this happens, maybe toward the summer. It isn't a really high priority, but it's going to need done. If reviews are anything to judge by, I can't expect these to be safe to drive on for more than 15k miles. Thoughts?

EDIT
These are the OE tires

I did find that Tire Rack does not stock all the tires available.

Have you tried other websites? Just to understand all the options for tires in your size. Then come back to Tire Rack to see reviews for that tire in all sizes which may have been hidden from your before when you specified your size.

Don't go down to a 50 - that's the wrong direction for durability (a safety issue). Going up to 60 is better. Also going wider might open a few doors.

+1, "+0" tire size your car! Works well.

And its usually 5 to 10 lower "profile" but equal width. Works well! See if you can go a "55"-series. Anything comparable.

P205/60R15 from P195/65R15 is AMAZING. Just an unrelated example. makes car look better too.

Cant go to 60 series; doesnt exist. Not even 225/60. Dont know if you would want to go 235/50 due to being smaller and 2 steps lower load. Not really a good alternate available without going real wide and tall.. Say, 255/50? 19" wheels are a bit odd ball. 18" and 20" get all the love.

The tire companies hate the fact that car venders are demanding unique sizes. Very few are produced so it is not a high profit business for them. Ford had to cut production of the Edge earlier this year when tires were in short supply in the weard size they designed the vehicle around. The trend to 19 and 20 and even 22 inch wheels may look cool, but it is not consumer friendly; higher cost, higher weight, reduced ride and performance, and very limited tire selection. Perhaps the demand for increased fuel economy will force a reverse to this trend.

Exactly. It is just plain stupid.
IMO the problem the OP has is that the tires are just too darn big. Makes less weight on the contact patch per unit area, which makes it easier to lose traction.

And it isnt a race car, nor does it need brakes worthy of 19" wheels to stop.

Stupid.

And people wonder why they're broke - it's trends like these.

Nick R, I would get different tires and rims for winter use ... maybe 235/60R18. They have a very similar overall diameter. You can verify that here:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Tire rack has 33 offerings in that size (excluding high-performance/summer tires):

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?width=235%2F&ratio=60&diameter=18

Not sure if you can get steelies in this size, though. You might want to opt for a really cheap alloy rim.

There are a whole slew of options in 225/50R19, they'll fit your 7.5" wide wheels just fine, and their load ratings are higher than your OE tires. They run about 1% less in revs per mile, so your speedometer and odometer will read about 1% higher than what you're clocking now, but that's no great shakes.

If you read the Reviews on the H725 (linked above) You'll see what I'm talking about. We didn't specifically ask for the 19" Rims, it just happened to be what the dealer had on the lot, and it had everything she wanted. It wasn't even something we payed attention to at the time, thank you.

Discount Tire has several decent tires under $250:
