My fiancee takes the Bar in less than 2 weeks. Many of her friends did not pass it on the first try. Has anyone here taken the NJ Bar? The debt these people are coming out with ($150k +) is tough to swallow. Hopefully she will see a good ROI. (Takes time).

I've thought about going back to school for a Master's or PHD. Problem is, my career goals have changed so dramatically. If I were to go back, I'd want to be a meteorologist. Have any of you changed careers where it required you to go back to school? I'm not sure I have the drive right now to do it.

$150K is nothing considering her earning potential for the next 30 years practicing law.

My oldest sister is a lawyer.......and that school loan is worth every penny.

JHZ, how do you like Collingswood or the area in general? NJ gets picked on but I really do like S.Jersey. Cost of living is high though. Collingswood is a nice town. Lot of good restaurants on the main street.

I do have somewhat of a lazy side. What I mean by that is, I havn't always had a huge career drive and I am someone that needs to have my free time for pleasure. Some people get their happiness/pleasure from the jobs they have. I've usually been one that receives that outside of work.

I didn't but one of my co-workers did.

He has a Phd in surface physics, studied at Oxford, etc.

Now he's a software developer. He took one of those 9 month intensive training courses that technical institutes offer.

After two weeks of tax season, I'm with ya Buster. I'm thinking real hard about going back to school for meteorology. Problem with it is, there are 100 people for every opening in the field and it's even worse for the National Weather Service. I'd personally like to get into severe thunderstorm research. That would be fun as #@$%!.

Preparation for the bar is the key to passing it. I graduated from law school ten years ago, but went into publishing and never took the bar. But when I decided I was going to take it last February (and in a state different from where I went to law school) I knew my only chance was to study my butt off. I had two strikes against me going in: nearly a decade out of law school, and taking the bar in SC but having gone to law school in Miss. But I passed.

If your fiancée (I'm assuming you're engaged to a female--a fiance is a male) has taken a good bar review course (I think BAR/BRI is the best), studied hard, and goes into the exam with a positive attitude, she'll pass.

Good for you, thats great.

Especially bc you were away from the material for 10 years! Impressive.

Well, if she fails it, she'll just have to take it again in July. G, she wants to do something that involves her Law degree, but didn't necessarily want to get barred. She now figures she owes it to herself to go through with it being she just spent all that $$ and time in Law School. Thanks for the correction, yes she is a female. LOL>

Drew, if I went back for meteorology, I'd be looking at a lot of math/science. It would be a long road. What discourages me though is the gloomy employment outlook in that field.

I graduate college in May, and have been considering going into law school or graduate school.

However, I do have a considerable amount of loans that need to be paid already....

I went back to college after 11 years and finished my degree in Geology, while still working 40+ hours a week.
I'd go back and do the Masters if I could find the time and money.

So? If it's what you want to do ..and you enjoy it ..are fascinated by it ..what more can you ask for in a career?

Let her pay for the toys.

I was originally from North NJ, so SJ is a bit of a change, but I love it. It definitely is slower - paced... ive noticed it, but it is nice. Colingswood is a great town, with a lot of great places to eat. Its just right - Haddonfield is awesome with its 'Williamsburg' type feel, and its real fancy but too expensive - so I live close but dont have to pay so much

. Since I work in South, south Phila., my commute is painless and awesome, plus i live within walking distance of a Patch stop, so I can get into town real easy too.

I couldnt be happier!

Yeah yeah, I know, but, it IS a general guide to assist in researching fields to enter.

Don't believe all you read, of course.

A few years back the sordid tales of woe regarding a lack of school teachers rocked the airwaves.

Last time I applied for a teaching opening I vied with over 300 other folks. Old Coot not hired.

Old Coot not hired times dozens and dozens of attempts.

If I was fluent in Espanol, however, Old Coot would have a job el quicko. But, no time, money or talent to learn a new language.

Gotta' be selective or risk playing the odds.

Over the years have had a horde of humans tell me to be a radio announcer, even strangers. Did my research, even befriended (partially) a local radio announcer to assist my possible endeavors. However, simply had too many folks in the field (including those who hire and college professors involved with broadcasting) tell me that if I was a young female or a minority to go for it, otherwise, the odds of winning the lottery were better than ever attaining a decent-paying position in radio (too ugly for TV). My research supported what those-in-the-know relayed to me.

It's tough out there in MANY fields. Will you be contending with hundreds-of-thousands of H-1B visa holders? Do a Google if you don't know about how Congress hates American workers (my subjective opinion).

Govt. free-for-the-taking verbiage with link following to read the whole thing:

"Employment of lawyers is expected to grow about as fast as average for all occupations through 2014, primarily as a result of growth in the population and in the general level of business activities. Job growth among lawyers also will result from increasing demand for legal services in such areas as health care, intellectual property, venture capital, energy, elder, antitrust, and environmental law. In addition, the wider availability and affordability of legal clinics should result in increased use of legal services by middle-income people. However, growth in demand for lawyers will be limited as businesses, in an effort to reduce costs, increasingly use large accounting firms and paralegals to perform some of the same functions that lawyers do. For example, accounting firms may provide employee-benefit counseling, process documents, or handle various other services previously performed by a law firm. Also, mediation and dispute resolution increasingly are being used as alternatives to litigation.

Competition for job openings should continue to be keen because of the large number of students graduating from law school each year. Graduates with superior academic records from highly regarded law schools will have the best job opportunities. Perhaps as a result of competition for attorney positions, lawyers are increasingly finding work in nontraditional areas for which legal training is an asset, but not normally a requirement—for example, administrative, managerial, and business positions in banks, insurance firms, real estate companies, government agencies, and other organizations. Employment opportunities are expected to continue to arise in these organizations at a growing rate.

As in the past, some graduates may have to accept positions in areas outside of their field of interest or for which they feel overqualified. Some recent law school graduates who have been unable to find permanent positions are turning to the growing number of temporary staffing firms that place attorneys in short-term jobs until they are able to secure full-time positions. This service allows companies to hire lawyers on an “as-needed” basis and permits beginning lawyers to develop practical skills while looking for permanent positions."

http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos053.htm#outlook

One good method of determing the reality of finding a job in an area is to seek out a message board(s) where folks in the field gather. There are a couple good ones for teachers that have a section for those seeking work. A couple years after I obtained my teaching certificate (and went to work substitute teaching which is not a "real" job, more of a day-to-day hit-or-miss thing) I noticed a growing number of posts by folks who had spent the longest time seeking full-time employment with no luck. More and more certificate holders gave up and sought a new field.

Finding a message board and reading about real-life experiences of others can be more valuable than any other source, in my always but not quite usually humble opinion.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!

guess what is the #1 major/career is that defaults on student loans. #2 is doctors.

I am going back to school right now, I am not changing careers but I want to move on to different aspects of the field. I will graduate 2.5 years from now.

I grew up poor. In the past 25 years, my dad has had three bankruptcies, a foreclosure on a house, and a repo on a car. He buys new cars every 3-4 years too. I can't stand debt. I owe nothing in credit cards. only loan I have is a car loan for the 06 vibe. It drives me nuts. I drive cars 15 years at least to get the most money for my car. With my dad's finanical situation, I had no savings for college. When I went to school, I worked and payed my way through the local public college twice! I had no loans. My contemporaries have 30k in college loans to pay for because they had to drive nice cars/live in nice apartments while they were in school. While I lived at home with my parents and drove econo beaters. I don't feel any sympathy for those people.

Amen, bro. I did the same thing and graduated debt free. Only my degree in Sociology is useless so now I drive a truck.

I got my BA without incurring any debt because I had a full academic scholarship. But it's virtually impossible to do post graduate professional studies for a JD, MD, or dental degree without taking out student loans unless you or your family are wealthy enough to foot the bill on your own.
