In Canada the cheapest is the Hyundai Accent at just $9,995 CDN which is now about 15% less in USD. Really cheap and you get a 5 Year 100km warranty!

Beat the snot out of it!

Funny how that's cheaper than a few ATV's and many snowmobiles... It would be interesting to see an automotive engineers analysis of how well they are made vs. an Accord. I guess even if you valued it at $0 at the end of the warranty, $2k/ year is a deal for a car.

Well when I bought my Santa Fe from them I looked at the Accent Engine and it screams Mitsubishi design, so I would imagine you would get quite a bang for your buck here... Too Bad my 6'3" body can't fit in this shoebox hehehe

I have been driving my 6 speed manual, 2007 Versa since Feb 07. I now have 21,000 Km on it and have never had a problem. No rattles, parts falling off, engine issues, etc. I also find the ride a bit better than the Fit. Seats are better made and after a couple of 500 Km+ road trips. my back and bottom were not sore (unlike some other "better" cars I have owned).
Of course it does not ride like a Cadillac or race like a 'vette because it is not a Cadillac or a Corvette. It is what it is and I am happy with the econobox.

I still don't see much point in buying any vehicles new. My wife seems to want a brand new car just to say she has one. In 2001 I purchased a 1997 Accent with a salvage/rebuilt title for $1300. Sure it had 95K miles on it and was rough as a cob, but it served its purpose and gave me 13K miles before I sold it for the same price. The same goes for this poor punk up at UNT. He had two cars and dropped out of school, could only take one home to California. He decided to sell his 1994 Cavalier to me for $1000. This was in 2000. I bought it, it ran rough, I changed the plugs and wireset, and it drove like new. I detailed it, put it on Excite classifieds, and sold it for $2800.

If I needed an econobox for some reason, like if my employer (at a place 10 miles away, which I am happy to drive my 10mpg Suburban to) suddenly comes to me and offers me a management position at their store 60 miles away, I will be looking at $1000-$2000 cars. Mid-to-Late 90s Saturns, Cavaliers, Escorts, Neons, Corollas, Sentras, Mirages, and Civics, etc etc. I still get 30-40mpg, still have airbags (some even ABS), and don't have to fork out $12-15K, let alone have a fat car payment for the next 5 years. I could be laid off at any moment, there's no sense in dropping 5 figures on a vehicle I might not need in 3 months.

It's true. Especially now that gas has dropped, you can go back to finding GREAT deals on older econocars and not $12k Geo Metros.

You can get a 2008 Toyota Yaris with air conditioning, CD/AM-FM, floor mats, etc for $10,900 so why people go for the stripped Versa is beyond me.

I believe I just read that Hyundai just lowered their price, so the Nissan having the lowest sale price was short lived indeed.
