I often turn traction off in my truck. In snow a bit of spin is necessary. Only while moving is TC useful.
I wonder if you are using too much throttle? If it just spins, stop, try backing up. Rocking may be necessary. Is this an automatic? IMO those are harder to drive in snow.
I hear you on ground clearance. My Jetta, even with snows, was often outmatched by four inches or more. Once you start pushing snow, or have a rear tire in a rut, or need to start on a hill--it can be hard. But it usually is ok on flat ground, even with all seasons.
