Nissan blue coolant. Anything the same?

I need to add a little bit of coolant to my mother in laws car. I know I can add water or AMAM coolant but I would rather add the same chemistry that is already in the car.

Seems silly to buy a whole gallon that I wont ever use up. Are any of the other asian coolants the same chemistry? Like Toyota red ? I have that here.

There are 3-4 automakers that use the same "blue" coolant as Nissan. I know Honda is one. We have a couple Hondas and an Infiniti in the family so I splurged $12 on a gallon.

Although I have no actual experience with coolant mixing and things going bad, it seems like mixing the wrong coolant types can cause serious problems.

Just buy some brand of Asian Blue. There are a couple of choices and they can be found inexpensively, plus you'd be left with some "universal" Asian Blue stuff in your garage stock. It'll come in handy at some point.

I've been using Pentafrost A3 for my Sub Outback for about 140k miles. I drain/fill the radiator every 40k. Good stuff. Usually I find best price on RockAuto but double check shipping cost. Or hit Wally and get Zerek Asian as mentioned above.

The SuperTech Asian Blue coolant shows to be in stock at the Apple Valley, CA WalMart. The Toyota Red coolant is the same chemistry with a different dye.

I bought a gallon of the Peak concentrate at AutoZone. It’s only $3 more than a gallon of premix.

I have a gallon (opened) bottle of that in my garage. I vaguely remembered the price when I mentioned "splurging" $12 on it but it was still a guess.... I know it was less than $15.

There are also "universal" coolants - that are fine for topping off - that do not change the color of the existing coolant when added.

Any Asian blue that's OK for Nissan use. Over a number of years, I used up a gallon of premix I had between 4 of my Nissans. It was Zerex Asian blue, I had bought it at walmart.

Nissan Green and Blue are a HOAT that is silicate, amine, and borate free. Nissan says the two are interchangeable but the blue has a longer life and if you mix them you get the shorter of the two.

I have used Zerex but mostly get the OEM stuff.

I would personally not use anything from or made by prestone. They like to use 2-EHA it seems, and Nissan likes to use a lot of plastic in their cooling systems, although its questionable whether a top-up with 2-EHA would do enough to cause an issue.

Prestone Max also comes in blue and is compatible.

No, it isn't.

Prestone doesn't use the correct formula. It is known to contain 2-EHA. It might even be the same universal coolant (the AMA yellow aka Ford Yellow) dyed blue :sneaky:

You have to double check based on supplier. Walmart uses different suppliers based on region, and not all of them use a reputable coolant.

The ST could be either Reochem or Prestone. If it's Recochem, it's ok to use (it will say Made in Canada on the label). Otherwise, it's Prestone and not compatible with Asian cars :cautious:

I believe those were the previous suppliers for the SuperTech coolants. My very recent bottle of ST OE Asian blue looks exactly like the one I posted above and does not contain 2-EHA which is the plasticizer agent unacceptable to most Asian auto manufacturer. The current version of ST OE blue is blended in the USA with both domestic and imported ingredients. I suspect it is likely a PEAK 10X formulation but with blue dye instead of yellow since neither contain 2-EHA.

The latest Subaru stuff is 2-EHA now, made by Prestone, someone posted a label here. Toyota just calls for any hybrid technology coolant. The concern is 2-EHA attacks silicone. However, RTV fails with Toyota OE coolants as well. So I’m of the opinion 2-EHA doesn’t hurt but should be avoided if possible.
