I happened on these for a deal and thought I'd try the "Engineered in Japan" version of an A02 for my wifes MDX and her 5K OCI's and see how it goes form there.

Here are the before pics, I'll put one on in a couple weeks and then do and post a cut and paste in 8-10 weeks after that. Wish me luck!

I used Nippon filters for many years in three Acuras and a Honda. Never had a problem. In those days it was dino oil and 4K mile OCIs. I liked the build quality and the rounded gasket.

For ~5k mi oci/fci no reason to think it won't be fine. It's kinda interesting it chooses to use the A02 number rather than A01, perhaps because it's the latest number. Without seeing the filter element (speculating) I'm going to say the construction is neither like the fiber endcap A02 nor Filtec no endcap A01 sold in the US. The one visible difference is the Nippon uses a nitrile adbv, where the oems use silicone.

I like the long k and feel of them as well, seem to weigh (by hand) the same as Filtech A01's but I will weigh some out against the Filtech ones to compare. Anyone know if there are weights for A02's posted here?

These are Malaysian made as well, probably contract for Nippon by Union Sangyo. Having these in hand they really seem very close to A01's from Filtech, not sure how the Sangyo ones compare to the Us/Canadian versions (A01/A02)?

I noticed the different material of the ADBV as well, otherwise they seem very close to a Filtech. Once I run an OCI and do a C&P we should see how they're constructed.

When it comes to the filter element, without cutting one open I'm not sure how you can tell? The Filtec (A01) element is a no endcap type. It's 'possible' the Nippon is the same. My 'pure speculation' would be classic metal endcap type.

In any case, ~5k mi. should be no problem.

I was comparing the visible elements (#of holes, thickness of materials, o-ring, etc.) and the weight; you are correct-any guess at interior construction that cannot be seen without cutting one open would be pure speculation.

Out and about with the family today and the MDX approaches 195,000 miles. Up on ramps it goes when we get home and the Nippon A02 is on with Mobil Super Syn 0w20 fill. See you in 10-12 weeks with a cut & paste.
