NHL star player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Mathew killed in accident.

Rural roads, 8:30 in the evening, suspected drunk driver. Recipe for disaster. RIP guys.

Hit by a drunk driver while they were passing another vehicle. So sad. Great player and good overall dude.
Yup. According to reports, from what I gather, the drunk driver was passing vehicles on a two lane road. One of the vehicles being passed moved left to avoid the Gaudreau brothers. The drunk driver attempted to pass this vehicle on the right and hit the Gaudreau brothers. I assume the drunk driver thought the driver of the vehicle moved left to block his passing when he really moved left to avoid the Gaudreau brothers.

This is very sad I went to school with their eldest sister. They are a great family that gave back in many ways to the south Jersey area. Salem county is very small and close knit and there are many connections here, the community is really coming together to support the family in this difficult time.

Very unfortunate.

Here in Florida seems like every week on the news a person on a bicycle is hit by an idiot driver.

Max prison sentence for drunk driver.

Time to get much tougher with drunks who drive...
They have. But it doesn't seem to help much, if at all. People will argue this, because drunk driving accidents produce far fewer fatalities today, than in the past.

But that is due to much safer vehicles being built today. Multiple airbags, (front, side, and passenger), along with crumple zone designed unibodies, and seat belts and shoulder harnesses, are what are making crashes far more survivable today than they were years ago.

This regardless if they're being caused by a drunk, or just plain incompetence behind the wheel. Arizona for example, has some of the toughest drunk driving laws in the nation.... And yet we still managed to have over 300 more DUI arrests than we did last year.

Not to mention if you have a DUI on your driving record, insurance will instantly become all but unaffordable for most people. (It's become too expensive today for many who don't have a DUI, speeding ticket, or an accident on their driving record). That doesn't stop them either. Most will simply drive without it.

Alcohol, along with it's constant, seemingly never ending abuse, is a much more complex problem, that will not be solved by just tougher laws alone.

People texting and playing on their phones are what scares me the most. Drunks are usually out late at night, when traffic is less. The phone idiots are a 24/7 non stop problem.

It's such a tragedy that even I play the, "what if," game? What if the wedding were next week? What if Labor Day were the weekend before?

Being in the Phila. suburbs, and being a Flyers fan, I remember all the talk about his ability when he went to Calgary after being drafted. With the wedding, even more specifically, the ceremony was to be in NJ and the reception in Phila.

An important fact in the accident is that the driver thought that the vehicle in front of him was on purpose trying to stop him from passing (illegally) when in fact the vehicle moved to the center of the road, to give room to the bicyclists. So the driver decided to try to pass on the right. There's no question the driver was enraged, but the sad part about it is people are enraged all the time.

What's eye-opening is that it's a maximum of 10 years per count. A person's life is worth that little?
