Searching a bit more how does the WIX XP compare? I noticed you can buy them in cases of 6 filters and they are designed so that you can use an end-cap filter removal tool on a socket wrench.

Also a question - with K&N changing the design - in the link above the issue they note is the new valve design and the small opening for oil flow through that valve - which on cold start-ups and after an oil change could cause oil starvation. Is flow rate something that manufacturers publish or third parties test for?

There's a lot of FRAM Ultra hype (and direct marketing) on this site so take some of these recommendations with a grain of salt.

The Ultra has, indeed, proven itself in many applications.

The Wix XP is a premium filter. They are well built and I would buy and use them without any concern, especially if substantially discounted.

Some might point to their efficiency compared to FRAM but they are literally splitting hairs.

A standard Wix also delivers great performance whether as a Wix branded filter or a NAPA Gold.

I do like your Pennzoil Ultra choice. It's both a great value and a great oil.

I just picked up three 6-packs of FRAM's Ultra Synthetic Oil Filters XG10575 (18 filters) for my Expedition. I got great price of $5.61 per filter and free shipping.

I also got a couple of oil test kits. This week-end I will be changing the oil - from RP's API 5w30 to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 in the Expedition. This will be the 2nd OC the first was at 1k miles which I changed to RP now at 6,000 miles I will be changing to PUP.

I will be sending the RP API 5w30 with 5,000 miles on it in to the lab and will post the report.

I did my OC in the Expedition changing to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 - after driving 200 miles on the new oil I definitely notice the engine noise is lower - and it seems to run a bit smoother.

I sent the RP to the lab and will post results.

The Royal Purple HPS 5w30 and it's synerlec additive is a far better oil than RP 5w30 API rated oil. According to Jimmy Morrissey who is senior automotive tech support at RP the film strength of RP HPS is 3-4 times that of RP API oil. Granted HPS line does not have the donut I'm using it in my Audi A6 which is still under warranty and not afraid to do so. It's the quietest oil I've used (HPS)

As noted above the two Mazda2's I have perform very well with Royal Purple 5w20 HPS. I have always use this oil since the cars were new - one is a rally sport car and gets pretty good abuse.

I will probably try HPS when the warranty is up on the Expedition as for now PUP seems to be a good oil for this truck.
