New Yaris and oil interval change

Dear friends..
I have a new yaris starting january 2008. I just have check for 1000km, but no oil change until 10000km. i think the oil is 10w30 GF3 ILSAC.

I am living in the tropical country: the temperature is about 23 Celcius to 35 Celcius.

The yaris NZ1FE engine recommended oil grade is 5w30, and can goes to 15w40 and 20w50 as manual said.

For long high mileage the manual said about ILSAC.

The question is:
1. When i should change the oil for the first time? 2500km, 5000km or 10000km ?

Note some of yaris UOA gives alot metal worn for new engine.

2. Since the ILSAC is usually pricey and the 15w40 approved by the manual, can i change to 10w-40 non ILSAC for 5000km oil change? like Shell Helix Plus 10w-40, Elf competition 10w-40 or local Group III oil 10W-40 that have this qualification.

4. Which better actually for tropical area. 5w30 vs 5w-40 vs 0w50?

5. Why all ILSAC GF4 is about 0w30 to 5w30? nothing goes to xW-40 or xW-50?

My Toyota Dealer uses Mobil 15w40 HP Plus I note your climate temperatures seem similiar to ours in Australia.

I asked the same question when to change the oil in my 2004 1.5L Echo, the dealer did it at 6 months with 4900km on the engine.

Dealer was reluctant to change oil earlier, and indicated strongly that it could compromise Toyota's service recommendations, as the initial fill supposedly has special additives.

As they have a great record in their sevicing of Echo's I just let them do their thing whilst under warranty.

I remember reading in old thread some long time BITOG members vouching never to fun thin oils or oils with a wide band in small engines that are designed to run hot for fuel economy reasons.

A 5w40 is quite wide band, perhaps a true PAO could be used (but could be very expensive), the Mobil Australia site for the 1.5L recommends the following
Crankcase Oil
MOBIL 1 10w30 or MOBIL SUPER HP 10w30 or MOBIL SUPER S SL
10W-30 or MOBIL Synthetic S 10W-40 or MOBIL SUPER S PLUS 10W-40 or MOBIL SUPER XHP 15w40 or MOBIL SUPER HP 20W-50 or
MOBIL 1 5W-50

I have been thinking about trialling the Fuchs 10w30 GTO MC oil in winter though now that its out of warranty as it has a short band and is very stable grade. OCI I use is 10000 km max or 6 months which ever comes first.

i am a firm believer in changing out the factory fill earlier instead of going 5 or 6K . Just me, everyone is different.

I'd go with the Shell Helix 5W-40. I'd change the oil for the first time at 5000km, then follow with 10,000km oil change intervals...

Thanks virgin for the answer. I think i'll go for 10w30 for 5000km first. Since 10w30 usually ILSAC GF3. Then goes for synthetic 5w-40 at 10.000km, 20.000km...
How about that?
My engine is 1500 cc VVT-i. [Variable Valve Timing]. Almost same as yours.

However shell doesn't have a API licensed refinery at Asian-Pasific [eolcs.api.org], where the shell helix products are imported from Singapore.
Can be assumed that this helix will perform as same as shell helix products on american region that API licensed?

Anyone has semi sinthetics ELF already? Since the TotalFinaElf Group has API licensed on Asia-Pasific.

i say it gets praise, i should say it gets recommended quite often, regardless if it meets such and such a spec.
