I'm mothballing my WRX after 126K of butt time and just bought a new 2013 GTI. I like to do an early oil & filter change on new cars. I purchased a 5L jug of Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 5W30 which is VW approved for 504/507, but recommended for VW 502 and 503. A nearby Napa warehouse stocks a few Liqui Moly oils. The owners manual states to use 5W30 or 5W40, 502/503/504. Does it have to meet all 3 VW specs? I don't want to jeopardize the warranty.

EDIT: This is the oil I bought: http://www.liqui-moly.us/liquimoly/produktdb.nsf/id/us_2011.html?Opendocument&land=US

If it carries the 502.00 spec, they you have nothing to worry about for warranty purposes.

However, if I remember correctly, this TopTec 4200 is primarily meant for modern diesel engines with DPF (but dual rated for gasoline as well), and as such will have a weaker add pack that may not fair as well over an extended OCI in a gas engine due to our higher use of sulfur in gasoline.

You are fine with it.
Due to low TBN that that oil containes, change at 5K. After that my advice would be Castrol 0W30 (GC) or Pennzoil Ultra 5W40 (you can get on Amazon).

After that, i hope he uses a good dealer that has Castrol OE 5W-40 for the free maintenance. This oil handles the 10k OCIs easily and it is FREE!

FREE does not mean it is BEST!!!
GC or PU or M1 0W40 are much better oils then what dealr is putting in VW!
IMO Castrol 5W40 is junk!

I'm sorry but that just isn't true. Castrol OE 5W-40 is as good as anything else out there. Too bad not all VW/Audi dealers use it.

It's an either/or type thing chap

502.00 is the fixed service interval spec for VAG petrol engines
503.00 is the old longlife interval spec for petrol engines
504.00 is the most current longlife interval spec for petrol engines

all ok for your engine on fixed interval
503.00 and 504.00 are the ones if you are on longlife regime

regards

Yeah that is good choice, but for winter I would use Castrol 0W30.
I use now 0W30 in all conditions, but since PU is back to Amazon, I might switch during summer.

on my 01 jetta 1.8T i got free changes. after a 5000 break in as soon as i got home i dumped the oil put amsoil 10-30 group IV-V synthetic in it, that worked well until i traded on an 01 TT 225Q, still 20" vaccum on boost gauge @ 200,000 miles! dumped oil went in girlfriends 99 malibu. that was before VW spec'd synthetics

I'd just change it at the factory intervals. They are still pretty conservative.

I have changed my oil in the tdi at 10k each time from the first time. No oil consumed.

The oil doesn't need to meet all three (not sure if there are any that will meet all three, FWIW). It only needs to meet one of them.

TopTec 4200 is fine, but way overpriced in my opinion. I would stick with 502 oils as they're better-suited to gasoline motors in the US.
