I had a chance to drive the old version one once. I floored it to the max red line of, IIRC 4500RPM, in neutral and placed it into gear. It took off like it normally would from a stop. Super slow, shakey, and lots of rattles!

Correct, that's why I wrote: "I can dream." Actually there are two versions of a Turbo I6 being used in RAM pickups, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. A single and twin turbo 3.0L I6 but it's way too much engine for that application.
It looks like a duck on wheels! But-this is the operation that thinks tons of (Fiat Ducato) Ram Promaster and MB Metris vans were good ideas too… Wonder what a replacement windshield costs?
The first work truck I ever drove professionally was an ‘86 S-10 with an Iron Duke, 4 speed manual & a service truck cap. I can’t even imagine how slow it would have been with an automatic!

Ram gets the single while the GC gets the twin? You've seen where they bump the power in less stressed vehicles.
I don't follow them closely enough to know. I would imagine you can get both the single and twin in the RAM, but I'm not sure. I do like the idea of an I6 gas turbo engine. However I would prefer an EFI cast iron sleeved engine vs a DI spray coated cylinder engine like Jeep/RAM is using. I can't have everything I guess, flame suit on.
Our local post office has them. Myself and a few neighbors stopped getting mail for a month. Apparently the postal carrier was afraid to scrape a tree and just decided to stop delivering our mail. We had no indication that it was an issue until we called and complained.

They have vans where I live. They are Mecedes Metris vans, but the Mercedes logo is changed to a USPS logo on the front.
I'm sure whomever is delivering my mail in Baltimore City will continue to just throw it away instead of actually delivering it.

My postal guy drives his own car, from the passenger seat, and it's right hand drive!
He showed me his set up and a lot of mechanical linkages for gas/brake. He steers from the pass side, though.

Same here.
Why USPS would have gone to the expense of paying for the development, tooling and certification of a bespoke vehicle is beyond me when there are off the rack vehicles available that are far less costly.
I am also a little dismayed that they didn't go with an EV for the way these things are used.
Mail trucks are used in a wide variety of situations and conditions. A one size fits all EV solution isn't going to be the best in every case. Battery performance in extreme cold weather, limited electrical power availability in aging postal facilities, long routes in suburban areas, etc are all reasons to prefer a traditional powertrain.
