New USPS van

My local postal office received their first batch of the Oshkosh NGDV. I stopped and talk to the postal guy about the new truck. He wasn’t too thrilled about it. He likes the AC in them, that’s about it. He said it’s way bigger, so you always have to worry about clearance, low trees, etc. My local PO got the gas engine ones so far. Why would they put a turbo 4 cylinder engine in a work vehicle where it drives at low speed, and does tons of stop and go driving? The EV makes sense for the type of routes the USPS does. Even a hybrid would be better than a turbo 4 banger, and it’s a Ford 2.0T with a Ford 8 speed auto transmission.

A nice I6 would have been my choice, I can dream. Otherwise a good non turbo V6. Maybe a diesel I4, dreaming again.

Many postal service yards don't have 20-50kW service available for charging dozens or more of those things at a time.

On the other hand, regenerative braking would be the bomb on a constant stop-start delivery vehicle.

Hybrid would be cool but isn’t this the same drivetrain as the non-hybrid Maverick? If so it should be easy to add hybrid as an option down the road.

For some reason, ugly is a highly desirable feature for deconstructivist central planning types. Witness the Brutalist architecture favored by such movements and governments, not to mention that recently opened presidential library.

I agree that it looks odd, but you gotta appreciate the visibility that thing has. I just hope it was designed with the mechanics who have to work on them in mind The ULV trucks went through lots and lots of power trains over the years. The ability to swap those out easily would be high on my design criteria. The other would be zero to 20 acceleration, lol.

A face only a mother could love. Obviously, a date night vehicle for the local postal carrier.

Anyways, on a serious note... I like it. I think it's cool & something different than what we've had for years. Sounds like a more efficient engine & mail delivery vans don't need to be a speedy vehicle.
