Looking to add a truck that will eventually be for my son to drive to school, etc. Considering new and used...new will be used when he is ready to drive.

Due to Stellantis' issues and no Hemi...thinking of excluding RAM.

Considering GM, Ford, and Nissan? Who has reliable proven platforms nowadays? Appreciate everything. Have a great week all.

Are you looking for full size, mid sized, or anything that might trip your fancy?

If I were to do it again, I'd look hard at an F150 STX 4WD. Right now here in the Northeast they're going for $43K plus fees (new 2024's). They have the 2.7TT V6 and 4WD. That's a bargain in these times.

GM 1/2 tons seem to be having electrical gremlins still. Not sure on the engine/transmissions if they were ever corrected. The I4 TurboMax has seemed to be proven as a decent engine. Full size I'd go with Ford though.

Mid size is a toss up. The Nissan Frontier looks good on paper, but looking around people are complaining about quality. The Ranger does have a V6 option, but pricing gets into the F150 territory. I notice Ranger's don't get discounted. Colorado/Canyon twins seem to be buggy as well. The new Tacoma is suffering from growing pains as well. A used 2021-23 Tacoma would be a solid option, but be prepared for a lack of power and a transmission that is bi-polar.

I'll reiterate that if I went back to when I bought my Tacoma I'd look harder at the F150. That's saying something being a Toyota fanboy.

You're going to get a varied responses around here, this has been my feelings.

Thank you sir. Probably mid size as will end up being driven by my son. Not against full size either. Heard similar things with Toyota. Appreciate the insights. Have a great day.

you're going to get more value with a full size, higher resale etc. if it doesn't work for it doesn't work, just wanted to throw my 0.02 in.

I would go with Ford or GM. The GM V8 engines are reliable for the most part. Ford has gotten kind of slack with their ecoboost engines which are questionable. Any of them can have problems but not too often.

My buddy has a base Nissan Titan. It's been bullet proof so far, I think they will be discontinued this year.

I have a 24 Tahoe with the L84 5.3/10-speed with 7k on it, Dad has a 22 Silverado with an L84 5.3/10-speed with 13k on it and a buddy has a 21 Silverado with L84 5.3/10-speed with 32k on it. All three have been very good to us. GM is doing a fine job these days IMO.

Buddies got a '22 GMC Sierra AT4 L87/10L80E with close to 90,000 miles....Bet half that is towing. Outside of maintenance it's been great.
The trans has developed a random harsh shift & the exhaust flap is rattling.
One of the "chip shortage" trucks with the DFM disabled.

My wife had a company provided '20 Silverado L84/8L90E & it was a POS! I would avoid '19 & '20 T1 trucks & the 8L90E in general.

These Gen V motors have me super impressed. With the amount of power and economy I’m getting out of the same displacement and same old 87 octane fuel. Besides the dumb DFM (even runs sometimes with a Range installed), the GM calibration on the trans and engine are very livable.

There is no comparison to a Gen 3 LS.

A slightly used Nissan Titan, they didn't sell as well as the big 3 or 4. Nissan is discontinuing them in 2025. Good truck, simple 5 spd auto v8 no turbo. A couple of co workers had them and they seemed to be reliable but not super exciting or overly powerful.

Didn’t the Titan have a lot of differential failures?

My 2012 Frontier V6 has been perfect.

Honestly, these things are mediocre for reliability and just so awful to drive. I could never recommend it. The new gen Frontier is better but it's what the Frontier should have been 5+ years ago and is already outdated. I don't know why anyone buys them besides the cheaper price.

2009-2010 F150 - 4.6L 2V.
First Gen Nissan Titan

Both of those are likely to be good with a good service history and reasonable mileage.

The 2nd Gen 2.7 Turbo seems to have been less reliable than the first gen. The '15-'17 well cared for seemed to be solid. Also the 6R80 Trans was really well sorted.

many gen V 5.3’s in industrial service and they have been bullet proof minus motor mounts. incredible power and economy. hard to overlook a chevrolet right now.

but in my preference, a 6.6L L8T truck with a 6l90e. absolutely been bullet proof for us with well over a million combined miles of trouble free service.
