I just purchased a 2007 Pontiac G6 a few weeks ago, it came with one key and remote. Needless to say I need to purchase a couple of keys.

What do you guys recommend, buying keys on the Web and having them cut at a hardware store or going to the dealer and buying the keys there? First time I've encountered this so I'm looking for answers.

Thanks in advance!

If they are the type of keys you can get copies made of at a hardware store, then do that. If we wanted more keys for our Equinox they would be $350 each and we'd have to get them at the dealer.

What year is your Equniox? I had one made at the local locksmith for 62 dollars. It is the key with chip/transponder, whatever you want to call it. I did not get a new FOB as I just needed the key.

2010. That is the cost the dealer told us for a new key and fob when we bought it. Never seen one like it before, it is a skinny rectangle and the indentations are indented within the rectangle, sort of like the indentation an underground swimming pool makes with the surrounding ground.

The key is integrated with the fob, and has lock/unlock/remote start functions integrated.

The key fob is likely a "dealer only" item.....unless they make "universal" key fobs?

Check your local hardware store or Walmart even....I know my local walmart makes some "chip keys" for 49.97...which is cheaper than most of the dealers (who charge for the key, for "programming" the key", and then another charge to "cutting" the key....)

On the flip-side, the WM chip key(s) are very ugly looking :P They got a large black handle on them that I don't care for, but eh, it works. Just not something that'll fit in a wallet

A purpse? yes :P One of those hide-a-key boxed? sure :P But really, I wouldn't risk putting a $50 key into a magnetic hide-a-key box under my car :P But that's just me.

BTW, be careful of what you buy online, a friend of mine tried doing this "cheap" method of buying a "Ford Chip Key" off ebay, and then taking it to WM for them to cut it? Well, turns out the "Hy-Ko" machine at my local WM did not "recognize" his off-brand chip key, so it could not "program" his "cheap ebay key" hehe....I guess the machine was only programmed to cut it's "OWN" keys....makes sense right? :P

Yours is different, the fob is part of the key. Blah. My old Jetta was like that.

Look into what the car "wants". I know with my 2001 Chrysler there's a way of getting it to "learn" new keys (and remotes) but you have to have two keys to get it into the learn mode. If you only have one key, it has to be done at the dealer. I found this out early and had a third key made when I first got the car. That way I always have two valid keys and can program more keys myself. I'm not sure how Pontiac works.

I buy GM, Ford and a few others keys and fobs on ebay, never had a problem.
Take the key to the hardware store and have it cut, the fobs are easy to program and usually come with decent instructions.

The first offer for $13.93 for two are the ones i buy, my Pontiac came with one key and fob now i have 4 sets for under $60. Post back if you need help reprogramming.

Edit: GM can relearn without the dealer as long as you have one original key which you have so no problem.

Be careful of who you have cut the key you buy. I bought a key on EBAY (came with programming instructions) and had it cut at a local hardware store. Their machine as it ended up was way out of spec and ruined the key. Got another and this time had it cut at a locksmith and it came out fine. HD and Lowes will only cut their own blanks. Ask who ever is going to cut the key how often their machines are checked and adjusted to be in spec? Should be on 6 month intervals. This locksmith also sold chip keys and they were very reasonable.

Thank you for the reply, I was looking at that very seller on E-Bay just wanted to know if anyone had experienced buying online and having them cut. I will proceed and hope for the best! Thanks again!
