Hello people;

First off I would like to say hello to everyone on the board as this is my first post on this forum. However, I have been going through this website for the past few days to view all the interesting info.

I think I am going to have fun here. ^^

Anyways, my mother bought a new Toyota Yaris... and I was wondering if I should change the oil before the first scheduled oil change... what with it being a new car and what not.

If I don't need to, then I don't want to spend the extra $.
However if I really should then I will... but is there anyone that can tell me that I should with some solid evidence, or data that suggests I should?

OCI is @ 8000km, or 5000 miles. It currently has 1652km, or about 1000 miles on it.

It's a 1.5 DOHC VVti engine.

Thoughts...

Your owners manual and service manual are your first source of good information. Don't change too early as it can be detrimental as most manufactures use assembly lubes that assist in the break-in. The 30 year old idea that you must change it at 500 or 1000 or 2000 is nonsense today. Your oil filter protects the engine against any damaging bit that may be around. JMO Ed

Toyota does not use a special break in oil and the assembly lube is not that impressive. It is still a good idea to change the oil within 1000 miles on a new vechile that has an OEM finished engine. If you have a reman the surface finish is no were near as good and 500 miles is the rule of thumb.I would not bother with a filter change just pull the drain plug and refill. After that initial change just follow the recomended oil change interval. THe main concer is embeding particles in your bearings. Even though modern engines wear much less then older desings break-in still produceing accelerated wear and larger then average wear particles!

Now I will say that in days gone buy it was really a big deal if you did not change the oil the first 500-1000 miles. Today it does not make that big of a diffenrence in 98% of cases. The thing is do you want to maybe be the 2% that could have benifited from the early change?

Their is no OEM left the planet earth that will tell you to change the oil at 500-1000 miles that I am aware of. The reason is that it would up their cost of ownership and they can not have that in a market that is pushing lease's!That little 1.5L is working it's arse off the whole time it is running!

If you look through all of the UOA on this site you will see that most of the factory fill UOA's look ok for most inports even when taken to the factory recomended oil change interval.None of them look great just ok some better then others. I used MOTUNEUSA's break in procedure and oil change interval and I am a happy camper. In the 60,000 miles I have driven my car I have only used 1/2 quart of oil total for makeup between oil changes. That is 1/4 of a quart on two different occasion. My wear numbers are always low andmy engine is clean. You do not want to know how many times I changed the oil dureing break in!

I agree with John, i'd change it at 500-1000 miles. I don't think it'll hurt your car leaving it in longer, but I like to play it safe. Better safe than sorry IMO.

I changed oil & filter at 1k and 2.5k miles in both my new Toyotas. However if I were doing it again I would not change the filter until the 2.5k change as Toyota fit a special filter to new cars. It seems of a much higher quality than the standard replacement. Then go synthetic as Toyota schedule.

Roger is correct about the factory fit Denso filter. It does not have a bypass built into it at all and is packed with glass media.

Change it when it gets to 3000 miles. Make sure you vary your speed so the engine breaks in nicely. After that you can go with Mobil 1 synthetic (silver cap) and Mobil 1 filter to have a 10k miles OCI. This car should last about 350k miles before you experience any hiccup, if any.

Silver cap.... I believe that is Mobil 1 5W20 ... but the manual calls for 5w30, which has a blue cap.

Is this correct? I don't think it is wise to go 5W-20 when the manual calls for 5w30..... especially while still under warranty.

So the O.E. filter does not have a bypass valve? If that's the case then why the ____ doesn't Toyota use a bloody Fram filter as their OE filter...

What is meant by "Glass media"?

Well if the OE filter doesn't have a bypass Valve, I am even more tempted to replace it with the Napa gold filter which I have already purchased. The price of the Napa fold oil filter is ridiculous(where I live)for it's size. I can almost get 2 of the same filter for my Ford Explorer and they are much much bigger. I guess that's because it's a fairly popular size which has been in production for quite some time... but who knows.

I might be able to answer that question:

As opposed to a standard pleated filter media made from paper, glass media will look similar to spun cotton. Your high end filters will have this material.

3K on the first OCI but I see no harm in going the full 5K. Toyota says you can use 5w-20 in these engines for fuel economy if you like. You don't have to and I'm willing to bet the real world difference in mpgs is next to nothing.

Congrats on the Yaris, enjoy 40 mpg!

So then why doesn't this high-end material used in the Napa gold filters? After all, WIX is smart enough to use a bypass, so why isn't Denso ( OE filter for Toyota ) use one?

Napa gold uses Cellulose based filter material in their filters as I last recall.

I am sure this is like splitting hairs, but seriously, what is better?

Really? where does it say this... cuz it sure as heck doesn't say this in their owners manual...

Also, 5W-20 = 0W-20 from many motor oil manufactures point of view. If I can get an advantage, even the slightest, I will take it. Where does it say I can do so?

Thanks a mill...

Got my first oil change on my Yaris today at 2,440 miles because it's 6 months old.

Went with GTX 5w30.

Excellent oil (my best UOA to date with 4.4 TBN after 5,800 miles on my Toyota) and will protect as well as any other oil.

I changed out my factory fills between 1000 - 1500 miles and never an issue. Your changing it out due to the 6 months is a good idea!

10k oci is great for the warrenty...

I know thats why I buy new cars..

To forget about the 60k mile warrenty.

Just change the oil every 5k with 5w30 SM oil (ANY name brand and type. Syn NOT needed) and your set for long life.

cheap syn-blend wouldn't hurt either , being the 1.5 ltr. under little more strain than the 1.8 ltr. .

Bill's right. My oil has always been changed at 3k (while under warranty) and out of warranty it was changed at 5k/6 months and it's still very clean under the valve cover and doesn't consume a drop of oil. Even the 3k/5k was probably being too conservative. Still has plenty of power, even after almost 13 years and ~126,000 miles. Always conventional, too. In my owner's manual it states to use 7,500 mile OCIs for normal driving, and this was back in '94 when the manual was printed and the car was made. Oils have improved since then. I'm doing 5k OCI's now, and feel very confident in doing so
