NEW TOYOTA PRIUS

I am getting a new Toyota Prius next week. After initial break-in, what do you folks think about the brand and type of oil I should use? I generally put on about 700 miles a month.
Mixed highway and city type driving.

The Toyota 5w20 is well-thought of by many posters here.
If you want to maximize fuel economy, Castrol Edge 0w20 is about as thin as you can get.

After you flush with 1.5K changes with a reasonable 5w20, I would go to Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20. Wait...I thought you got free oil changes from Toyota? Anyhoo...I would use M1 over the Toyota 0w20 any day of the week, the Toyota 0w has too many VII's and I just question its quality since they are willing to do Free OC's for 2 years. I Also will say the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy is SO much cheaper than EDGE. When one of the Auto stores has a sale the Edge is a good deal but $45 as opposed to 23.50 for the same quality....you figure.

Last month auto zone had Edge 5qts & Mobil 1 filter for 32.99, Mobil 1 is usually 29.99 for same deal or Mobil 1 Extended Performance for 35.99, so i wouldnt say edge is too pricey. while i do realize this isnt an everyday walmart price

The Toyota 0W-20 oil is good stuff. That's probably what it has (0W-20), and what I'd continue to use. Other fine choices are Valvoline SynPower 0W-20 and Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20. Both are easily available at the retail level. Other choices are out there but not so readily available. My local dealer put Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W-20 in my '11 Camry a few weeks ago and that stuff runs real nice too, but I can't find it in stores to buy it.

A co-worker friend of mine just bought a 2010 Prius with 3k miles on it. An old guy traded it in on a new Camry Hybrid. It's in my favorite of colors, Blizzard Pearl.

Save your money and just take the free dealer service-check back in 2years for the latest and greatest in oils+free car wash.

At best you will get 2% fuel savings from oil choice over generic oil. With the relative low mileage you are doing and high MPG of a hybrid, the fuel savings will not offset the cost of buying your own oil.

I'd let it go for the 1st 7,000 miles before getting the oil changed since the I.C.E. only runs about 60%(?) of the time , So , that would be like getting a regular engine oil change at 4,000 miles . It's your car , so whatever makes you comfortable go with that . I'd have them put in the TOYOTA 0w-20 or 5w-20 since it's a good quality oil and if any issues arise from one of the free O.C.s it would be under warranty . Enjoy your new PRIUS and keep us informed on it's performance and gas mileage .

You can always run motorcraft syn blend 5w20, you can get 5qt jugs at walmart. It's good oil, and an excellent value for the money.

If Toyota is really using the 0w20 then its going to be good enough for the intervals they are offering. I don't usually suggest to do so, but the dealer might be a wise choice here unless your rich.

If you want the best for the car though, maybe use Edge or AFE
