New tool thread

Mellif dual battery tiller, and Mellif angle grinder. Both take dewalt batteries. Today I am tilling the entire back fence line and the wife is planting potatoes and grapes, and the angle grinder is on sale for $30. I'm getting more serious with welding and another grinder is always welcome so I dont have to swap between the cutter, grinder and wire brush.

Dean Doherty on YT tore down Mellif tools including this one and they got his hard to get approval.

Well today I'm intercontinental and I eat French toast with Hazet wrenches (I think @Trav is to blame), Merry HS120C straight from JP (Trav is to blame again) and a Clore power supply (I think Eric O is to blame as he uses the MAC version).

I was able to get the power supply at $102 through Zoro with a 20% code. They're ~$103 on Amazon but if I can save a buck, I will.

I'm tired of draining batteries or worrying about draining batteries with key on, doors/hatches open or troubleshooting things like power windows etc. Hopefully the Clore will be sufficient for that (not programming)

Schley 10500 for parking brake cable couplers. Most of the tool trucks rebrand this as their own. The least expensive was a random seller on walmart.com. I figured if they were a scam I'd raise a stink, but it came as expected.

There's presently a Matco (I think they call it the PBP1050) on ebay listed erroneously as "Marco" and they'll take offers, if you want the same thing with Matco stamping

'Tis the season of winter closeouts. Walmart is clearancing these brushes in-store -- obviously regional.

I've got the 48" and 50" versions but this one goes 61" and was $13.50. For my JL on 37s and my stock '11 F350 4wd this is needed to fully clear the roof. I'm a bit over 5'10" so it's not like I'm super short.

Before and after pics of the pair of Channellock pliers I found in the road last week. I soaked them in vinegar for 5 days, then in vinegar and table salt for one day. Afterward I rinsed them, then soaked them in water and baking soda for 15 minutes followed by a final rinse and dry. Then I coated them with a light film of machine oil and let them sit overnight. Today I hit them with a steel brush in my drill and gave them a final wipe with a shop rag. Not perfect but they'll last forever for me. They appear to be Channellock model #420.

I think I have the same pliers in the shed . Still use them . 🙋‍♂️

Icon 8 piece snap ring pliers set for $50 during the "parking lot" sale at HF. Not sure if I'll need them for a wheel bearing change this weekend, but if the Channellock 907 prove too small, I'll break the set open.
I bought the Icon snap ring plier set for $50 today on the last day of the sale. I have some other sets with interchangeable tips, but they never seem to work correctly so I got these to try out.

I poured waste oil today and trolled the clearance rack at one O'Reilly.

I found the IPA 9010 Q-tip assortment for $8.31 which is awesome because just the other night I was thinking I needed more of certain sizes. These are great for cleaning out fuel injector seats and a million other uses.

I also came across this Power Torque poly rivet gun kit for $20. It seemed like a good deal. I've never needed a poly rivet, but it's a tool I don't have and I've never met a tool I didn't have that I didn't "need" :D

I then went to my second O'Reilly hoping to find more Q-tips but instead found another poly rivet gun. Just like government spending, I figured why buy one when I could buy two for twice the price?View attachment 265064

I then went down a rabbit hole learning about poly rivets. This guy has a good vid explaining it although seemingly 80% of the vid is talking about the amazing build quality of the Pittsburgh gun, which he says is identical to MAC -- I could believe this for sure but as I understand it he has not laid hands on the MAC

Ironically his biggest complaint about the Taiwanese Pittsburgh is a rivet at a pivot because he says the gun would otherwise be 100% rebuildable -- but I fail to see the logic in rebuilding a $15 tool.

The Power Torque is MIC but has a screw and nut where he complains of a rivet:View attachment 265065

NOW it turns out ~$20 is just kinda going retail at many places -- although I have no doubt O'Reilly's previous regular price was far higher --so you probably don't need to rush to your O'Reilly.

The video guy does have a good point about plastic rivet quality, and being MIC I have no idea if these rivets are decent.

Quoting myself, the poly rivet gun kits have fallen to $14.17, making it cheaper than most Amazon kits. I also found this mini 1/4" hex ratchet for $13.27. I'm a huge proponent of mini tools like this, primarily for under dash work.

I thought the ratchet looked like a longer version of the absurdly short 711L
https://www.amazon.com/711L-Mini-Ratchet-Wrench-Extentions/dp/B09T9J8N5Z

and I believe it is, although astute viewers will note a slight difference in the reversing switch:

They both get a 1/4" hex recess in the end of the handle, too:

Recently Tekton released "jumbo stubby" (my description -- I don't recall what they call them) all-sixteenths. I've found such things VERY useful in the past so decided to try one

The Fujiya 53G is top and that's OLD and for reference

The new tool is the Tekton at bottom. It goes to about 1-5/8" and could really come in handy. Take note: also a great gift for the gearhead in your life (no, I don't own stock in Tekton)

I recently did a steering box R&R on an '07 Ram 2500 and was surprised to find one of the fittings at the box was decidedly 20mm.

This shows my lack of experience as I didnt think 20mm was really much of "a thing", and esp not on a relatively common domestic application.

No, it definitely was NOT 19mm or 3/4" nor was it 21mm or 13/16.

I got by with an open end wrench but decided to order 20mm crowfoot and crowfoot flare pieces. I specifically wanted 3/8" dr. Having these ensures I'll never see the application again, and I decided against SnapOn pricing given how infrequently I anticipate using them ;)

I got a Williams open end from Zoro with code, and opted for the Tekton flare
