New tool thread

I have two old cords held together in numerous places with electrical tape, so this will be a great improvement. I usually have one left plugged in all the time at the front porch going out to the driveway. Looks like a tiny neon bulb so doubt it uses even 1 cent a month in power. No sure the meaning of cheesed, but it is the color of cheddar.
Well 14AWG is ok for lights and maybe a small tool at 50 feet, but 12g min for me and mostly I use 10g nowadays. I have a freezer plugged into 10awg, yeah I shouldn't have a freezer on a cord, but I like to push the limits.

Cheese or cheesed. Derived from being angry or disappointed. (UK) As in this 14AWG wire ACTUALLY measures the same as 16AWG! Chinese wire gauge seems to really go with mmc (minimum material condition). Light on copper if you follow.

Among other uses, I use two off these strung together and a third briefly at the edge of the property to mow the lawn with an electric Black and Decker mower. I do have a 20 foot 12g which is heavy enough that in 50 feet would be ungainly for just one cord. Can't imagine it in 10g, not to mention the cost.

As mentioned, made in Philippines not China. Rigid is a reputable company and doubt they would put their rep on the line by passing off 16g as 14g.

How many amps does your Mower pull, worst case?

I hope Rigid monitors their suppliers, regardless of country. I only mentioned China because even on the higher end stuff it was always something. That was part of my gig mid career. Always a misunderstanding, wrong alloy, wrong size......

Yes, Voltage drop is hard on electric motors!
Well - Aprox, very approx 4V drop RUNNING for his 50 feet with 14g, which is probably survivable! Start might drop below 110V though, depending.

I Use the big boy 10G cords for portable tablesaw and router table - when I have them on my auto switch for the sawdust shop vacuum. There is a built in delay so both motors don't start at the same time - heck that could blow a 20Amp breaker.

Anyway I cry when I buy the big cords (I have a 50AMP 240 4 wire cord)

Vicious cycle, lower voltage over heating because more current and less cooling - both because less rotational cooling and more current needed for same watts (power)........

Why? I mean if you somehow connected it to 240 volts, you would certainly overheat and fry the motor. If it ran at 100V, wouldn't it run slower and cooler, no?
It depends on the type of motor. Power tools vacuums or a simple fan run slower and draw less amps on less voltage. A large table saw or an air conditioner will pull more amps. A good rule of thumb is if it has brushes in the motor it doesn’t care about low voltage. No brush motors are affected by low voltage by drawing more amps.
It just does. No they run hotter.
And less volts is less amps too!
Not necessarily.

If the cord has a legitimate UL listing then it is what it says it is but laws of physics still apply.

Well, I didn't mean a universal motor.
Look I'm not an engineer and I know enough to NOT be dangerous.
I should just keep my Jibber jaws closed a lot of times.

That's the kind of motor I was talking about.
Again, I should just keep my trap shut!
All I do anymore is cause confusion!
You are alright. It is confusing for most people due to the many types of motors.

Ultimately most motors are dumb. If you ask a 1 hp motor to make 1000hp it will do everything in its power to do it till it kills itself.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Thanks, I do cause confusion these days especially!
LOL
I've proved it already.........LOL
Thought it was everyone else, .....Nope! It's me!....LOL

I do know there are different rules and actions and reactions, with different types of motors, Pretty well understand them.
In a "back of my mind" kind-0-way.
I don't and won't take the time to Study Study! on something these days, unless or until I need to.
And again, fortunately, I DO know enough no NOT be dangerous.....lol

Wife buys me stuff on a whim and turns out to be super useful even if $15! Amazon security fastener driver set.
