New tool thread

Just picked this up today at Home Depot. Needed the IR thermometer but it came with the circuit tester and I don't have one. We did a 2300 mile Az to Md run a couple of weeks ago with a junk Uhaul truck and trailer and I wished I would have had one to check tire and bearing temps throughout the day. Doing the same run in reverse in a month (in July) so gotta have this. We also have some long trips planned with the travel trailer and I'll use it then too. Have had good luck with Klein tools and got that great deal on the multi tester a week ago. $35 with good reviews, certainly good enough for my use. A day always gets better when you buy a new tool.

Many of my older (30 years and older) 1/4" drive Snap-on sockets are missing the detent wells or have very shallow wells. Same for the older Craftsman 1/4 sockets.
Yeah some of my older ones don’t either. Some stick on the ratchets better than others though. This one was by far the worst about falling off though.

Got a Maddox bearing, race and seal driver kit from Harbor Freight. Also got impact extensions too since I don’t have any 1/2 impact extensions. Got the extensions for $6.99 with Inside Track Club. Then used the 20% off for the driver. All together was $41.05 heck the driver would of been that with tax alone so I feel it’s a good deal. I walked out to the car with it and my dad had his gloves and my mom is like why did you two get non useful things LOL.

Since I started a new job my parents bought me a new toolbox. Unfortunately no blue ones were available or any color except orange or yellow so orange it was because I don’t like yellow. It sticks out like a sore thumb in the shop I’m at lol. Mine is the only orange one there is plenty of red and blue ones and a desert tan one that my other coworker has lol. I will have to put the handle on Monday because I forgot my actual Allen keys I had the socket bits but they were too big to fit to put the handle on. This is the 44 inch they didn’t want me to bring anything but a cart but I told them just a cart simply won’t work especially since they offered me a better job than I applied for anyway. All my new coworkers were happy to help me and dad unload it from my truck and were very welcoming towards me so I feel it’s going to be a great place to work.

The US general carts and tool boxes are really pretty good! I don't how how they would hold up for professionals like yourself, but for a diy home garage, they can't be beat.

Nice cart! Enjoy.

I’ve worked with several guys who had them. I have a cart I used in the shop my whole career with a Craftsman box. This is a nice box I’m the only one at this shop with a US General but they helped me unload it and were really friendly so I’m excited. Everyone else has Mac and Matco boxes.

Starting out all different makes and models. Then once they see my ability I get to pick a brand to specialize in which will most likely be Ford or Toyota or Subaru since they are the best sellers for them.
Good for you man! I pass thru Roanoke a few times a year. You're working at an independent shop? Do you have any schooling? (I would be remiss if I didn't make a recruiting sales pitch: If you join the Virginia Army National Guard you can get a ton of money that can be used not just for a University but also for trade school.) Also, if your looking for some new high quality tools; search Williams; real nice stuff at realistic prices.

Best of luck to you

Yes I have three years of automotive in high school and completed the 1 year program at the local college. It’s at a large dealership actually in Christiansburg. About 45 minutes from Roanoke. Thanks for the offer but I am happy where I am at. Also yes Williams does have some nice tools.

New tool week! Spent some covid overtime on tools!

New compressor to replace the cheap Lowes kobalt that died.

Also HF had a 20% fathers day coupon that worked for the sand blast cabinet.

Going to try cordless battery trimmer. Brushless 40volt.

I received a sand blast cabinet for Christmas. Looks very complicated to assemble and is still in my living room. The wife isn’t happy.

Not really car related…but tool, nonetheless...

A woodworking tool. Powermatic 8” jointer with a helical cutter head. Bought from a guy in a nearby town, brand new, assembled, all the books and tools. Perfect condition. He was setting up his own shop, then had to move before he could use it. Paid cash. Needed the Uhaul to move it as it’s rather heavy.

Two new sockets. Got them for my job. I realized I didn’t have a 21mm impact socket. I had been using 13/16 as a sub but it’s just too tight especially since I will be working on mainly newer stuff I for sure don’t want to mess it up. They told me we would work on tons of Mazda stuff too so I need the 23mm for differential plugs. Pretty nervous still about starting and driving 40 minutes down the road to get there.
