New (to me) car! '06 Jetta TDI

Got an SMF clutch kit from RockAuto for $65, wholesaler closeout.

Can't beat that!
Nope!

You'll have to let us know in 100k or so... I did an SMF on my '04 Jetta at about 249k. Once over 300k I swear I had a bit of a noise from the transmission. I think I could only hear outside of the car (as found during... beats me, I recall removing the axles to reboot the CV's, and I must have noticed extra play in the transmission?), but maybe I could hear during decel also? not sure anymore. But it made me wonder, why did they use a problematic DMF in the first place? Made me wonder if I might have been prematurely wearing the transmission by using an SMF, extra vibration going into the transmission somehow.

I didn't see that anyone asked the $64 question on this car, which is, what oil ya running?

I assume API 5w-40 and not the 505.01 spec oil.

The 02A/02J generally tolerates an SMF conversion well, but there are a few high-mileage issues they can develop that may develop faster with an SMF. Namely rivets in the differential and cross shaft.

Luckily there are plenty around.

Fixed the badging

Pictures of the rest of the car? I missed your initial post till now. Looks pretty glossy from the picture above.

I had a 2006 Jetta with the PD engine and dual clutch DSG automatic. I ran M1, 5W-40 in it with great results. Jet-A and TCW3 along with a dose of Stanadyne lubricity additive brought the HFRR results down to 255 (Superb) and the engine lived a long time without trouble.

The EGR cooler did develop a stinky exhaust leak around the actuator shaft, which I repaired by making a brass bushing to replace the 'rope' seal that VW used.

Overall, a nice driving car, but not reliable. The third time it left my wife stranded sent it on its way. The "mechatronic" unit in the transmission was a constant source of trouble, as was the dual mass flywheel.

I repaired my EGR cooler valve by lopping the shaft off, locking it to the "bypass" channel, filling the gaps with JB Weld exhaust paste, and making a cover plate.

Takes a little longer to get heat but not a big deal here in NC.

Good to hear that the TC-W3 brings the HFRR score down. I have started using Power Service in addition to the oil.

New tires, again. One rear went flat and I ruined it driving somewhere safe.

Fronts we're at 4/32 after 6k miles due to overinflation. (OOPS)

Put a sent of Tiger Paws on for $460. Oh well. Had them put the good Falken on the spare wheel to replace the 21 year old Continental.

What? A 21 year old continental with the sidewalls in tact? (They weren’t as good back then as they are today)

Btw I’ve always wanted one of these, but it was never the right time for my use case. Jetta TDI For The Win!!!
