New conti tires and a new noise?

Just wanted to hear your guys thoughts on this as I think it’s just a bad new tire. I had four new conti extreme contact DWS 06 plus installed on the MDX Thursday and as soon as I left discount tire I thought wow these are noisy and that shouldn’t be the case here. When I got on some smooth black top I can very clearly hear a rotating whoop whoop noise like the tire has a flat spot or irregular tread. I call discount and they were closing so I would have never made it back in time to tell them what is going on and I made it back as soon as I could on Saturday. They went and double checked everything and said that it all looked ok. Discount said to drive on the new tires for a couple hundred miles and monitor the noise to see if it gets worse or better and that if I’m not satisfied then they will replace the tires. Discount is standing behind their tire and labor but it’s just gonna take some back and fourth to get it fixed up.
I just can figure out what would cause so much noise but hardly and vibration. You would think that I’d have a vibration issue before a noise issue.

If it is flat spotting as you suspect it would seem that you would notice a vibration first. It's been years, but that was my experience with new DWS also purchased at DT on a 7th gen Accord. Flat spotting so bad in mornings I could feel the vibration. Took some time driving for it to go away. Reached a point (30-60 days) couldn't take it anymore, returned them and got new Michelin Primacy MXV4 for a little more money. They were great. In fact, last year put on another set on a newer Accord last year, as good as I remembered.

All that said, your DWS issue may be different (reads like it) but if you decide to return DT should honor their satisfaction return policy.

I'm very surprised that an all-season would flatspot like that. Interesting.

Could be a bad tire, any one of them have a lot more balancing weights? I'm pretty sure at most of these places, the tire tech gets told to install the tire even though they know something is odd about it, and see if the customer notices or cares to address it. Flat spotting will go away in a couple miles IME.

One tire has 3/4 of an ounce.
Three tires have between 2 1/2 and 3 ounces of weight. A little excessive to me

I would get them replaced asap a few days (100mi) driving should be telling. Don't fall for stall tactics.

Silly question - are they directional and mounted properly? I could not see a DIR arrow or graphic on sidewall photos.

I just found an "outside" notation -

Yup. They are mounted correctly with the word “outside” on the outside

First and only time I've ever noticed or had that experience with any tire. And I've purchased/run many tires in my life. It wasn't a subtle thing either. Was worse and longer duration on colder mornings. I'm confident flat spotting was the issue. After the fact, read some comments others had experienced similar with the DWS. Tire size 215/50-17. As noted, new Primacy MXV4 tires, all good.

If you drove it more than about 2-3 miles before hitting that quiet blacktop and the noise was still there, -or- the noise did not go away within that 2-3 miles, I would say flat-spotting is not the issue. It's still warm in Indiana, and flat spot tires in a warm climate (70*+) will smooth out fairly quickly. Sounds like another issue to me. Discount is doing the right thing in both asking to drive on it, to make sure it's not a superficial problem to replacing them if the tires do not improve.

Get it returned and pick a different tyre. I have the same experience, no one on TireRack except me experience the unusual road noise. I decided to keep it and for a year I got bothered by the tire noise, until it get slashed one night. Don't torture yourself.

I purchased the same for my 2007 Accord SE and had the same issues.. I replaced them with Michelins and the vibration was gone and was back to a smooth ride..

I've had the original dws, the dws 06 and the dws 06 plus. They all had the bad flatspotting. Worse part was I would jump on the NJ Trpk after a quarter mile of moving and have to go 65.70/75 mph immediately. They really were bad for the first 5 miles. Installed Michelin pilot AS3 and now the Michelin Pilot AS4 and they are as smooth as silk from the start. However, the conti's seemed better in the snow if you can put up with them.

Hmm... That seems like a lot of weight for "good" tires and I assume these are factory rims. To check if they are flat spotting, just put them up to sidewall maximum, and they will flat spot much less.

Bad tire or bad balance

I like continental tires - but have found that every once in a while a bad egg makes it through. I recall a tire rack review a little while back where a tech mentioned he sees more runout on continental tires than he likes to. I had one set where the truck had uneven turn-in left/right until they were replaced. I’ve not driven the DWS06+, but the DWS06 I had was super quiet except for a higher pitched tread singing. I’m a fan of the tire. I suspect you’ve got one that is out of round or has poor runout. I’d think they could find this with deeper inspection, road force balancing, etc..

I have DSW06+'s on my Spider and I too have a whoop whoop sound, but only around 40mph on smooth pavement. They have almost no vibration whatsover at any speed and above or below 40mph-ish they sound like any other tire. They required very little weight to balance and two of them dont have any balance weights at all.

interesting to me as I've had Continental DWS-06 Plus on 2 vehicles and not heard (or had) any issues with them...a little over 2 years and 10K miles on the CTS Sport Wagon (now gone) and almost 3 years and 10K miles on the CTS V-Sport...

I've read about people having issues with Continental tires but I never have...currently have a set of Continentals on my 2005 Yukon Denali and have had 2 sets of tire on other cars I owned or take care of...all purchased from Discount Tire Direct (now Tire Rack)

hope you all get yours taken care of...

Bill
