Pricing out 20 new windows for my home. The quotes range from $5800 to $13500.

"Lifestyle" (Great Lakes Window), "Kensington" Window, and "Lang Exterior" are the three brands I've gotten quotes for. All are E-gas, double pane, vinyl windows.

Any advice on windows. The home has single pane, original windows from 1950.

All say theirs is better. Two say Lang Exterior sucks. All salesmen.

Cheap vinyl windows are all the same, I have bought a number of brands over the years and one is not really any better or worse than the others. I probably have a window salesman jump me at least once or twice on every job site.

If you want good windows your going to have to pay, Anderson 200 series are good entry level windows. But if it were my house and I was going to live their for awhile I'd buy the 400 series.

Are these replacement windows are new construction with sills?

Existing sills.

I can't help you with the choice but quality of the windows as well as the quality of the installation and warranty service should be considered. In 2002 I had the sliders "patio doors" replaced with contractor grade 'low end' Jeld Wen doors and after about 8 years the E coating turned gold and opaque. I called Jeld Wen and they sent over a glass guy to look at the glass and and Jeld Wen replaces all the glass in the doors. Last month one of the doors frames broke I called Jeld Wen and talked to the rep and a week later a complete slider arrived for me to install. Buy the best quality and warranty service windows then an excellent installer doors and windows last for quite a while. Replacing the single pane to double pane made quite a difference. In my opinion.

While the new glass is better I think there is probably a lot of leakage around the window. If it were my house I would go with replacing the entire window unit. In my old house I bought several Marvin made to order windows as the openings were surrounded by cobblestone and thus the windows needed to fit the openings vs make the openings fit stock windows.

Get a quote from Window World, they are the largest in the USA.They beat 9 other window co.and the windows were triple pane. The other 9 were double pane.

I'm going to be changing the windows on my home in the next year or two, so I'm keeping an eye on this thread for any information that can be gained form it.

I installed Jeld Wen builder grade windows in our house last year. So far, we're happy with them. All are double-hung, so if there are any problems, it's easy to replace a sash or two here or there. Jeld Wen is supposed to have good customer service, and they have a lifetime warranty, so I feel confident in the product. It's a massive difference so far from the old wood frame windows we used to have.

Having replacement windows installed is one of the biggest rip-offs in home improvement. After doing a few in my house I can do a window in about 15 minutes. Most of the windows in my house are standard sizes that are stocked in Lowes, Home Depot, etc. I would buy 4 or 5 on my way home from work on Friday and easily install them over the weekend for about $120 a piece.

I'm looking into it right now. I can do it, just haven't in the past.
