Well around 161K I started hearing a grinding noise from the rear. Just changed the differentials and transfer case fluid about 5K previous and was sure the rear was fine. Took to my garage --- parts and labor --- little over $1300.00 with tax for both rear wheel bearings and seals. Anyways, my mechanic went on vacation to Florida this morning for the next 2 weeks and I forgot to ask if he drained the rear differential to do this job?? What would the normal procedure be for doing this particular job??

Note: Truck is running and sounding great...

Don't think you need to. Do you know what brand bearings he used. That's steep unless he used oem which is acceptable.

If the 2008 is anything like the 2006, that’s a good price. Cost me 1300 for one side a few years back. It’s a sealed cartridge bearing in its own grease, not really in contact with the diff lube.

is the tundra a floater?

Sealed wheel bearing pressed onto the axle shaft. Special service tools and a shop press needed to replace the bearings.
Have an 01 Tundra with 204,000mi on the original rear axle bearings and starting to hear roaring noise at rear at high speeds. Will be bringing it to a shop to save my sanity lol.

AFAIK none of the Tundras were. Actually one of my complaints: give it a huge (they're over 10" IIRC) ring gear, then make it SF and 5-lug?

I've done rear bearings on an '02 Taco with a home brew tool and from what I can see the Tundra's the same deal. There's a bazillion (this number might be low) import tools on Amazon for doing this, most with complaints of poor weld quality (which is easily fixed). You can often find 'em on Warehouse Deals even cheaper. It's just a short length of tube with a couple flanges welded to it, so they're hard to hurt.

But yeah, it was nice to have the bed height/Z-space of my 50T press.

I'd recommend a guy just pull his shafts and take 'em to a shop if you wanna save some coin.

Replaced front wheel bearings in my kid’s 08 Lexus rx350 earlier this year in southern CA at an Indy Toyota/Lexus only shop. They quoted me $700 ea on the phone but got out the door for $1200 total. He recommended and installed timken bearings.

Did take it to a shop with all the tools/presses,etc.. to do the job. Garage right down the street from me that I get 2 of my vehicles inspected did not have the tools. I always appreciate your feedback though, you are one of the more respected/knowledgeable ones to me.

I got this one on Warehouse Deals for $85. Haven't used in the two years I've had it so I can't say it works....but I would have the ability to modify if necessary.

You can drive the bearing back on with a long pipe of the appropriate ID. When I did the Taco I failed to realize the shaft steps up where the bearing rides and almost got my pipe driver stuck (pressed) on to the shaft!!

I saved an old drum (again, Tacoma) to stand the WMS in -- otherwise you risk driving the wheel studs out as you hammer the bearing on ;)
