ASTRONOMERS have found a planet-like object in the outermost reaches of our solar system, officials at that National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) announced today.
The object, which is roughly half the size of the Earth's moon, has been named Sedna after the Inuit goddess of the sea, and is thought to be the coldest body in the solar system, and the most distant object orbiting the sun.
Researchers at the California Institute of Technology discovered the planet using the new Spitzer space telescope, which made its debut last August.
Scientists believe the discovery of Sedna to be the most important find in our solar system since Pluto was first spotted in 1930.
Space officials announced the discovery today at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
