I was talking about the NSF budget...but IIRC DARPA is many Billions, NASA is around 0.5% of budget (17 Billion? which makes me want to weep...our greatest achievements as a society are worth only that to us? really?? putting men on the moon took about 4% of the Federal Budget...)

Each of the Services spends money on scientific research (USN for example on oceanography, marine science, engineering - look at the rail gun that's been discussed on BITOG...). so there is funded science across the Federal enterprise...

But when I think of science for science's sake...I think NSF...perhaps too narrow a view...
