My in laws gave me this new pellet grill today. They said it was their way of thanking me for cutting up that fallen Hackberry tree. I wasn't expecting anything in return for that work, but I look forward to getting this grill set up tomorrow. After doing the initial burn in, I think I'll start simple with some good old burgers. They also gave me a 40# bag of the Pit Boss Competition Blend pellets, and a nice cover.

Congratulations! I used to bbq a ton on offset smokers, and have thought for many years about getting a pellet pooper. Never did. I'm at the point now where if I want bbq, I'll go through a local's drive thru.

Are you going to cook the burgers hot or slow smoke? My experience says unless everyone you're feeding has had slow-smoked burgers and enjoys them, don't go there yet. They're usually a love or hate food.

Hot

My sister and bro-in-law been having on of those a couple years now. He loves the thing. Always cooking brisket or roast and even small turkeys on it. Those pellets are amazing and it is so neat how theirs has this timer setting one can just load it up and set for the preferred cooking one wants to do. Enjoy! (y)

All I know about pellet grills at this moment is a coworker says it's so easy cooking on them it feels like cheating. 🙂
As a guy with an offset stick burner I agree that it's cheating.

Enjoy the grill. It's nice to be recognized for your hard work.

I bought one about two years ago. An Oakford from Home Depot. I liked the smaller Pitt Boss too but for $65 more I wanted the Wi-Fi Bluetooth option. You're going to love it. They're great. It's difficult make bad food on them. Do need a bit of maintenance like cleaning out the firebox routinely. You're going to love it.

Got the new grill assembled with help from my FIL. Would have been a pain without a helper to hold things in place. Did the initial burn off and now doing the seasoning. Wife is making dinner so I won't be cooking on the grill today. I think I'm going to really enjoy this thing.

You have plenty of pellets for awhile too. You should store them in a dry place. Although, I keep the hopper at least half full in the grill and the grill is outside with a vinyl cover. I've never had an issue with humidity and pellets.

I have the Pit Boss heavy duty cover. The grill will stay on my back deck under this cover, next to my Weber charcoal grill. Other than the pellets that are in the hopper, the rest of the bag of pellets is kept inside my garage.

Only thing I'd do is put a sheet of plastic or a trash bag under the bag of pellets if you're leaving them on the garage floor. Most of the pellet bags are perforated and concrete releases moisture with temp changes.

It's been a busy week here on the ranch (don't have a ranch, I've just always wanted to say that), and I haven't had a chance to really put the Pit Boss through its paces yet. I did fire it up last night and cooked a pack of beef hot dogs at 225° for just over an hour. They turned out as delicious as Ball Park hot dogs get and I figured out where the hot spots are on the grill, so that's helpful. I think I'll do a Boston Butt this weekend. Maybe a brisket next week if I'm feeling frisky. I think this pellet grill will do a fine job of replacing my old Masterbuilt electric vertical smoker and el cheapo, rusted out, 8 year old, $100 Dyna-Glo gas grill that would not die, both of which I gave away last weekend.

Cooked a 1.8 pound pork loin on the Pit Boss tonight. Set the smoker to 275° and cooked until internal temp hit 145°, then took the pork loin off and wrapped it in aluminum foil for 20 minutes, then sliced. It was more tender than I thought a pork loin could ever be. Delicious!!!

Very interested in this, how is the smoke flavor , compared to a wood or offset wood smoker ?

If smoke flavor is the most important thing to you, this Pit Boss would probably disappoint you. The smoke flavor is not very strong, at least with the pellets I'm using. Then again, today is only the 2nd time I've cooked on it, so time will tell. Longer cooks may yield more smoke flavor.

It will likely get stronger when your grill is more seasoned but will not likely get as strong as a wood or charcoal burner.

Do some ribs or a pork butt. I don’t grill on my pellet Green Mountain Grill, just slow cook. I use the Weber Genesis for burgers, steaks, chicken thighs, etc.

Pork butt and beef brisket are on my short list. Will be doing very soon. I'm an old hand at smoking pork butts, having done many on my old vertical smoker, but I've never done brisket before. I've watched several videos where they cooked brisket on this pellet grill, so I think it'll turn out good.
