New Orleans

Had a nice week down there.

Great hospitality, great food. Really friendly people.

I had to top off some oil in a walmart parking lot for my wifes Tuscon, and TWO people came up to me asking me if I needed a jump or needed any help. One lady even said if you need help I'll call my husband to come over, lol.

Found some excellent food every place we went. Loved the garden district area, very quiet yet a trolly ride into the city.

Recommend avoiding Bourbon street. It is so dirty it makes any place in Vegas look sparkling clean. Lots of people trying to run scams on you, and a general feeling of lawlessness. Two 15 year old kids were shot and taken to hospital on Saturday night, we had left there area about 8pm, and the incident occurred around 9pm.

Enjoyed the Audubon Zoo, the New Orleans steamboat lunch cruise, the Harrah's Casino (Spotless, and very nice Caesars property).

Had some excellent Abita beers on draft, may become my favorite brand of beer.

Also spent some time in Baton Rouge visiting family. The downtown area is coming a long a bit, there are a few oyster bars, and a few historical things to see.

We walked about 5-7 miles per day.

If anyone wants to know some of the good restaurants we found PM me I'll look it up on my credit card statement.
Cool! Where was the Walmart located? The one on Tchoupitoulas Street, upriver from the French Quarter? They get a mix of people both from the Garden District/Uptown and from less upscale areas. I drive past it every afternoon on the way home.

I agree about Bourbon Street, and this from a guy who literally grew up there. No kidding. You might have walked past the gate to the apartment I lived in from age 6 to 22 in the 700 block, near what is now The Cat's Meow club. Of course, back then the Quarter was more of a neighborhood and less of a theme park. Bourbon's first 6 blocks were full of strip joints and bars even then, but the side streets, and those paralleling Bourbon, held mom-and-pop groceries, drugstores, newsstands, and other service businesses. There used to be a Pontiac dealership, for instance, on Rampart Street near the St. Jude shrine.

Yep we were on Tchoupitoulas street.
Across the street, near that light at Felicity Street, is where the infamous Warehouse, the music venue of the early '70s, was located. I never went to a concert there, and I'm glad I didn't. No air conditioning.

My wife and I, along with our 3-month old, are driving to New Orleans in the morning, to celebrate our first wedding anniversary!

We’ll be staying for 3 nights at an Air BNB in the Lower Garden District, near the intersection of Race St. & Magazine St.

So far, no concrete plans other than doing some touristy things, like Cafe DuMonde, and definitely finding as much great food as we can while in the city, and hopefully hearing some good music.

The WWII museum sounds like something we’d like to go to, as well as the lunch riverboat cruise that JustinH mentioned.

Now it’s time for a nap (I just got home from work) before leaving in the morning!

We’re excited! This will be the first time to visit the area for both of us!

Ill read back through this thread again tomorrow for some ideas on what all to do!

If you look "suspicious" and have a crummy old car with out-of-state plates, drive down toward Venice. You might get lucky enough to stand in the sunshine by the levee while you wait for the K-9 unit to show up.

I wish l had known you were coming to La. I would have invited you to a crawfish boil at my cousins house. He would have also been more that happy to take you on a swamp tour here near where we live.
