Just picked up a 2013 mustang v6. Looking to see what's the oil of choice here for synthetics. It's been awhile since i've been here but when i last posted anything pennzoil was favored. Have 6 quarts of motorcraft 5w20 for the first change at 500 but will go syn for 2nd change. I've been using edge with titanium in our fusion se v6 since it's second change in sm and sn versions and saw only one issue or non issue going from sm to first use of sn. Slight oil use which could have been from changing formulations. Or we were ising e85 for most of the 1st sn run who knows but has 35 grand now on the clock. Since the sn formulation has appeared to be rock solid but have no UOA's to back that up. Thinking about throwing castrol in the stang in edge syntec or edge titanium or i would like to try synpower all in 5w20. So.....anything change in formulations good or bad? Recommendations please. Thanks to all who reply. Have a good weekend.

You can't go wrong with pennzoil platinum or the edge oil. Would also consider M1 20 wt oils, as well as the Toyota 0w-20 if specs are met.

You could also keep using motocraft as it is a good oil. I'd also consider PYB if it meets your specs, depending upon what your use profile will be.

Lots of highway because of travel to and fro work. Was eyeballing M1 ep 5w20 but have not really used M1 since like 2006. Like castrol products but not a fan of mobil for no reason.
LIke pennzoil, valvoline, and quakerstate. Used all quite a bit in previous vehicles. LIke synpower and castrol edge bottles. Real scientific but they are all pretty close in price at my local china marts.

One thing to consider is if both cars require the same spec oil, and you want to use good, syn oil in each, why not just use one standard oil, like the edge?

Highway is great, but I wouldnt extend OCI past standard interval until warranty is over.

I would find a 0w20 with a good viscosity index and use it in both. Your motor will appreciate it year round.

if it calls for 5w20 why not use 5w20?

Thicker is not better in most cases...

Use what ford tells you to use they seem to know a few things about the cars they build

Wouldn't matter.

5w20 = faster oil flow to the top end.. Oil runs cooler because it circulates faster, 5w20 oils are usually more stable, 5w20 is thinner so it has less drag on the engine and gives the engine slightly more power and gas mileage sometimes. It also makes a difference on the dino i saw this first hand a few years ago at one of the ce classes for engine rebuilders.

thin is in when it comes to todays oils..

Unless you were in Australia and wanted to be a warranty abiding citizen.

Do the V6 models still spec a 30 weight whereas the V8 models spec a 20 weight? Gf has a 2007 V6 and it specs a 30 weight. Synpower 10W30 made it run smooth! Better than the M1 I have in it now.

Listen I have a 2012 5.0 and the Motorcraft 5W20 and fl500S work perfect in my car. Don't overthink this too much and also don't waste your money unless you are really truley going to extend you OCI's. For 5000-7500 OCI's MC oil works awesome and costs considerably less. My wife has a 2011 Lincoln MKX with your motor and I cange it at 7500 miles with the above. Doesn't burn a drop and runs great.

This is a pretty good handle on things.

5w20 is the spec for the stang and fusion 3.0 v6. What to do what to do?

No, they're now a 20, too. My buddy's wife just bought a new V6 Mustang; the manual calls for the 5w-20. He has the GT500 that uses the 5w-50.

I have a 2012 F150 with the 3.7l and I was debating what oil to use also. Thru 4 months of ownership, the truck now has 7k miles on it...95% highway, no towing. I plan on running 10k oci's and I also plan on having this truck for a long time. Right now the oil monitor is at 35% w/ 7k on the truck, factory fill. I was going to change it at 10k regardless what the olm said. I was either going to stick with the motorcraft oil/filter or try something else.

sissix, you will get many opinions on whether you should dump the FF now or go by the OLM. The only reason I dump mine early on the FF(factory fill) is that every single oil analysis I've seen for a new engine it has higher metal content due to the engine breaking in. Will this increase the wear on the engine long term? I don't know. Probably not. My wife has a 2011 MKX with your motor and I run MC 5W20 and an FL500S and change it every 7500 miles and would definately go 10,000 miles, but since I rotate the tires at 7500 I just change the oil too.
It always has seemed to me with Ford engines, when they start to burn a little oil during a oil change cycle, it is probably time to change it out. At 7500 miles my wifes engine still has burned no oil so I do believe Ford's claim of 10,000/1yr.
Some will argue that you need synthetic oil to go 10,000 mile change intervals, but I think this 3.7 can with MC semi-syn. especially with your high highway miles!
