Mobil and Pennz will both have an "Olympic" medal rating coming soon. Kinda changes from using words like "better" or "performance", they will use pictures of medals (iron, bronze, silver, gold, platinum". This way people can choose which of the all-the-same-oil best fits their wallet, giving the consumer ultimate choice over what oil they shall buy. Next year they'll switch back to just using words.

Is there that much of a difference?

Yes I think so. Mobil 1 is rated for up to 10,000 miles. Mobil Super Synthetic is good up to 7500 miles. And Mobil "Super" is up to 5000 miles.
Mobil 1 is their advanced formula, their premium product and gold standard. They distinguish Mobil 1 from other products as often as they can.
