Carries lots of great approvals, though. And that will suffice, to me at least.I'm definitely not the expert, but that is what I've read here. No ANs or esters.

I think a few people have explained why 5W vs 0W doesn't matter in the summer. You seem deadset on running the 5W in the summer, so best of luck with it. The W rating does not come into play except at low temperatures. It has the same approvals, so I'm sure it will serve you well.
Thanks. I try to learn. If 0W30 and 5W30 would be same then why would 5W30 even exist? They got winters covered by 0W where I clearly see advantage of 0W. If the same oil can serve summer as well then why would oil companies and auto manufacturers not eliminate 5W30 oil altogether ( or to that matter get away with 5W20 and replace it with 0W20)
In the jug I have right here of ESP 5w30, which I bought recently and shows a production date of November 2024, it has BMW LL04 on it. I believe they stopped using esters at this time. I will check my older oneDid the prior version of Mobil 1 5w30 ESP meet BMW L04? If not, that could be why they removed the ester component. In that case I'd go with the M1 ESP 0w30 every time. However, we still don't know if what they're using in the 5w30 is as good. It could very well be.
Ok thanks. Here is my older jug, which was produced in July 2023 and supposedly still used estersView attachment 280742
I’m so curious as to why they removed the esters from the 5w30 but not the 0w30. And what exactly is the base oil blend now for the 5w30? It still has the same approvals, so whatever they are doing it doesn’t seem to have hindered its performanceOk thanks. So that's not the reason then. Thanks @Patman
I was told here one of the BMW approvals has virgin oxidation limits.I’m so curious as to why they removed the esters from the 5w30 but not the 0w30. It’s likely to hold its viscosity better in engines that tend to beat up on the oil.So 5w30 ESP has no advantage over ESP 0w30 whatsoever?
Hard to say.So 5w30 ESP has no advantage over ESP 0w30 whatsoever?
Ok, I would take this as a benefit for me as I am moving from xw20 to xw30 oil in hope that it will provide better film thickness for my cam shaft lobes that are wearing out. It’s likely to hold its viscosity better in engines that tend to beat up on the oil.
Quit buying problem vehiclesI suspect you’re right. I know the ester formula works so I keep using it. Maybe I’ll give the ESP 5w30 a shot in my next problem vehicle.
