We are looking at a new vehicle possibly. We have three options: 1) a new Sorento, 2) a new Equinox, 3) keep our current Equinox for now. We aren't sure what we will do yet, but want to gather info. We like the Ford Edge (except the mileage) but unless it has 0% and like $2000 cash back over the 4th it is too expensive.

So, does anyone own or have any input on the new generation Sorento? We are looking at a LX trim with the Convenience package that comes with the 4 cyl DI engine.

Thanks for any input.

Edit: I'm also going to check out the Mazda CX5 tomorrow. Looks like it is about the same size as the Equinox (we can't go smaller, but same size is OK) and I thought it was smaller. Prices are OK, too, and they will likely have improved incentives over the 4th (currently only 0.9 for 36 months, but expires on the 2nd). Any info. on that helpful, too.

I'm waiting for the diesel CX-5, which is rumored to be available next year. If mpg is a factor, it may be worth waiting to see what they decide to release in diesel first. The announcement should be in Aug/Sept.

Hmmm... didn't know they were coming out with a diesel CX-5. Or is it that Mazda is coming out with some diesels, and a CX-5 may or may not be one of those models?

We are leaning towards keeping what we have for now. But still not 100% sure, so any input on the vehicles still helpful.

I would not hold my breath for a diesel CX-5.

Honda was going to build a diesel car...remember that?

The new Skyactiv-D will be in either the Mazda 6 or CX-5 first (already in the Japanese CX-5). They're scheduled to announce which model in the fall I believe. I'm holding out for the CX-5.

As somebody who used to have two minivans, and who now has two SUVs, I'd have to disagree with you on this.

Thanks. Makes it seem like before too long they will put the diesel in both probably.

You're welcome. I've been watching this closely and it seems likely that it's a go. The SKYACTIV-D is their 2.2 liter turbodiesel. It's said to produce 310 ft-lbs of torque and get better gas mileage than the gasoline engine. As long as I can order it with AWD, I'll probably buy one as soon as it's available.

The problem with any thing diesel is it is going to be so complex that I'd not want it just for that reason. Plus *any* diesel would have to get quite a bit more MPG since diesel fuel is so much more $$ and "issues" during the cold seasons. (close to $1 more per gallon depending on the season)

Back to the Sorento. Nice package, excellent standard equipment for the $ and with the 4 cyl looks very easy to work on. With the model that the OP was asking about the only concern with be with the DI (as I'd personally have with any brand) since the jury is still out on long term effects.

Crossover SUV vs minivans? Really? Two different platforms and different missions.

I don't find modern diesels to be more complex than a gasoline engine, and I suppose it matters where you are for the price issue. To be honest, ignition by compression rather than spark is simpler to me. Diesel here is on par with premium gas, so about $.30 more than regular for the most part. Even if you break even with fuel costs, it puts out twice the torque and similar horsepower making for a much nicer driving experience.

I've never had trouble starting a modern diesel in subzero temperatures, and I regularly see -20F and usually once during the winter -30F. The neighbor's 2011 Jetta TDI starts every time. Plus, Mazda addressed this issue by engineering specific ceramic glow plugs to maintain cold weather reliability.

Americans just aren't used to diesel passenger cars yet, but I think that'll change now that they're becoming more popular. VW is selling theirs as fast as they can make them. The fears of complexity, not being able to find diesel fuel, and cold start issues are things of the past.

Looks like the CX-9 is due out in about 18 months, and may contain the 2.2L diesel as well.

At about that time we'll be looking for a larger vehicle to go along with a mid-sized SUV. Maybe we hold off 18 months and get both a CX5 and CX9 at the same time, trading in our Equinox and Vibe. Only concern is the ability of the 2.2L diesel to tow anything, especially in the large CX9.
