Dealership visit for warranty work left me scratching my head...

2020 Kia Sorento 3.3l v6, 75,000 miles purchased new and has Kia's 10y 100k powertrain warranty. Since the last oil change at 70k the inner passenger side CV boot started slinging grease out of it. There is a trail of thick grease on nearby surfaces which can easily be seen just by looking at it. The boot appears to be intact and not torn, I don't know why it would sling grease.

Get to the dealer and tell them, passenger side CV boot is slinging grease. Service writer says yeah, maybe, they will look at it... etc. No diagnostic fee. A few hours later get a text saying the CV boot is bad along with the oil filter housing that bolts to the engine and it is leaking as well. Both items will be replaced under warranty, no charge.

After the vehicle is home via the wife picking it up I get under it to see what they worked on. The passenger side CV boot and axle are still the same, and the grease is still slung all over. No one touched it. Hmm.. I see the driver side got a brand new CV axle assembly, the whole thing is new. The oil filter housing is new. The oil is fresh. Hmmmm..

Paperwork notes our initial concern to the service writer on top. Below that the Tech writes that he heard a clicking from the left side of the vehicle while moving it and stated 'DS CV axle making clicking noise while turning, entire axle assembly must be replaced". Also, "Oil filter housing leaking, must be replaced with oil change". No mention of anything about the grease or passenger side axle.

Well, mixed feelings. There was no charge today for any work performed but I think we got an axle meant for someone else's vehicle. Maybe they got an axle meant for our vehicle. I heard no such noise driving the car. My thing is the tech was RIGHT THERE 2 inches away from the leaking CV boot and grease tracks when he changed the oil filter housing out. He had to have seen the mess.

How would you handle this? Obviously I could go down there again and complain. But I could also wait until the boot slings even more grease then go back before the warranty expires.

A quick call to the dealership to actually speak with the tech is a good idea. A lot of times the whole story is not written out on the service sheet. Maybe the oil filter housing was leaking enough to sling oil all over the PS CV axle boot and it made it look like grease? I'd also clean up the offending grease and monitor for more slinging.

I was thinking the same thing, perhaps they thought the 'grease' was in fact oil from the filter housing leaking. Coincidentally the oil filter housing to block parting line is exactly in line with where the grease is slung. I use 5w30 oil, but why would oil look and feel like wheel bearing grease in clumps? After over 40 years of working on cars I know the difference between oil and grease and the residue is like thick grease.

I guess the best thing would be to clean the residue and monitor for any further slinging.

Maybe the service writer mistakenly wrote up replacing the driver side boot, and that's what the technician did?
Yeah, I thought that too.. the write up states 'customer states passenger side CV boot leaking grease... check and advise...' My thing is that the tech, upon seeing the oil filter housing leaking which we did not bring to their attention (I planned on replacing the housing myself very soon with an aluminum one) would see the grease slung on not only the housing but the back side of the engine block, crossmember, steering tie rod, and belly pan. Simply by removing the housing he would have gotten thick grease on his hands.

The service writer texted back and said the tech found the leaking oil filter housing and that too will be replaced.

The only thing I can think of is that the tech thought the oil leak was causing all of the grease residue splatter and the CV boot was fine. The CV boot looked fine, which is why it's puzzling to me how grease is coming out of it.
