Today was the last day at the Radiator shop. Monday I start my new job at a large construction company. I am the maintenance guy for all their equipment.

They have small concrete cutters,pickups,18 wheelers, tractors etc.

They have their own shop and do many smaller repairs in house.

I no longer will be dealing with customers or stopping what I am doing to answer a phone.

The new place is only 2.25 miles from my house!

You need to continue to build your resume. Stick to your career track, I don’t think you’ll find parts stores to be satisfying work at all.

I’m sorry to hear of your job loss. That’s quite a change.

Personally, I think you should move to TX and apprentice with Clinebarger...but that’s just me...
I agree. The people that I went to school with who work at parts stores said they get treated and paid way less than they are worth. I do have certifications for Ford as well that I got in school so that might be another option I have. If I was able to move to Texas I sure would I hear the work is much faster and busier down there. One of the senior techs also lost their job but he gave me a few of his tools to help me complete some of my sets since he is at retirement age and just plans to retire.

That sounds awesome Chris! Glad to hear you found work, which can be hard for many right now. Tinkering with the company stuff sounds fun, and getting away from customers. I'd be interested in some pics once you get settled, of the various projects you get to take on.

Good luck Chris! What's their shop look like?

I’ll be looking for a new job soon as well since a customer cost me and a few others at my shop our jobs over a absolutely ridiculous reason luckily they let me give my notice instead of terminating me. I’m thinking of going to work for somewhere like Firestone because I have heard they give you really good training until I have money to open up my own shop. I might go work at a Parts store or something too but I’d rather be wrenching instead of selling parts.

If you want to twist wrenches for a living....Stay the course. I worked at a Midas before jumping to dealerships. Because I didn't go to trade school....I had to have some experience/job history before a dealer would hire me. Working for my grandad & dad underage didn't count ;)

What I learned there was invaluable, But it's kinda a step in the wrong direction for a guy with dealer service department experience. You most likely have plenty of brake/steering/suspension/tire time under your belt. Diagnostics/Driveability/Electrical are most likely the skills you need to hone? Not sure you'll get much of that at a Firestone?

Yep I need more of those skills for sure. I have plenty in the other areas yes. I may try to find another dealership to work for like Ford or somewhere. I have minimal experience with the electrical area especially so that’s something I want to learn more of. I had thought of going to some classes at a community college to help me as well since we never did hardly any electrical in high school automotive class.

Little filled up. Has tanks of oils. Grease gun on a long hose ( I saw 5% moly on the sticker) and a huge press. HUGE!

Made by Dake and is bigger than the ones I see on google

Any lifts, At least for the pick-ups? Dake makes presses of just about every size. They are just about the only US made presses you can buy besides Norco.

I have a Dake Arbor Press & one of my most coveted pieces of shop equipment!

Oh. Almost forgot. My old boss gave me a going away present. He gave me the AC machine! I have to figure out how to get it home without breaking the scale inside it.

Better than a gold watch! (y)
I enjoy your posts, keep letting us know how it goes.
