New Hyundai CVT (IVT) Experiences

I doubt you're going to get much in the way of reliability or durability. It's just too new. As for how it drives, I wouldn't take someone else's word for it. If you're interested in a car equipped with one, I'd recommend just test driving it and putting it through its paces.

I have no experience with the new IVT, but from what I read from Hyundai is it's a CVT with a chain belt instead of a pulley belt with a wider ratio than typical CVTs and simulates 6speeds. Hyundai claims to install the "world’s first in the compact car segment" chain CVT. From what I gather on the internet, chain CVTs tend to be more durable and are used for higher torque output engines. The 2017 on up Nissan Pathfinders switched to a chain CVT allowing it to tow up to 6000lbs. It seems to be a more reliable transmission but it's too early to tell. Audi was using chain CVT since 1999 but had issues with the friction plates and ultimately discontinued CVTs from 2014 in favor of DSG.

With that said, I have never owned a CVT but have driven a couple. Call me weird, but I like when the CVT does not have simulated shifts. It drives me bonkers when CVTs do the fake shifting. I know what a CVT is so give me the smooth power delivery and efficiency.

Yes I love how they drive as well. They are so smooth for a daily driver.

I've tried the '20 VENUE and liked its performance . Not any difference from the 6 speed auto .

Google "2020 kia soul ivt transmission problems" to get some good reading. Until about 5/2020 build dates and/or new sales that left the lot with a new software update, prior sold vehicles had many reported problems with their transmissions failing under 20K miles. Supposedly it has been fixed with the software TSB.

I do not know if that translates to anything with Hyundai models but give the same corporate parentage of the brands, I would be suspect with Hyundai CVT's also.

Or you could just be patient. Before long you will hear from informed posters that:

CVTs are weak
CVTs fail early and often
CVTs sound different
CVTs can not perform well
Any vehicle with a CVT is not worth purchasing
I think they have there places in low torque applications. Enjoyable CVT in wifes accord. 48k miles so no clue and just praying for longetivity

I'm always suspicious of software "fixes"

Subaru has had pretty good luck with chain drive CVTs. They seem to be real keen on replacing them for minor issues like a pan gasket leak. That skews their numbers towards the unreliable side.

Yeah, it's almost always not a real fix.

Software that can be changed/altered to control how "hardware" works. Yes-it can be a fix. For anybody that drives a late model car-they could have the dealer "reflash" the ECM for various "bugs" that are found (by the factory) that need to be addressed. Sometimes this is done to alter a shift pattern in a transmission-among other things.

Look, you take your chances. My 2013 Sentra CVT blew up at 57k. Nissan just paid $3900 for a re-build trans. A class action suit paid for it. YMMV.

I spoke with a popular transmission shop in Long Island, and the owner said, "I get 3 to 5 calls a week on Nissan CVTs, have 2 at the shop now and another coming on Tuesday." That's pretty sad considering the amount of Nissans on the road isn't that high.

Driven a few, never owned one and probably will exempt them from any list of future new car purchases. The vehicles I have driven have been low line airport economy rentals. It may be just me but they seem to have some weird harmonic that sets my teeth on edge and plain wears me out after a day of driving one. Anytime a manufacturer changes designs to capitalize on cost savings per unit it should be a red flag to consumers. The argument of better fuel mileage doesn't hold water when DCT's are a near match to manuals. Of course they cost more to produce. With all the aforementioned. Most people won't notice and will receive a lifetime's worth of transmission life from CVT's. Make sure the drivetrain warranty is reasonable.

Normally I would be in the same camp with you. From what I gather though with the KIA models with the CVT/IVT having problems, the software fix actually does fix the issue. KIA has been pretty proactive that anybody with an affected model and a stored code for the IVT, they have been replacing them outright and the replacement transmissions with the new software have been doing pretty well.

Also test drove an '20 Elantra SE , 2 Kia Rios' ( hatch ) and 2 Souls . All seemed like the 6 speed auto they replaced . A shame of the issues , would like to purchase one of them with large rebates and dealer discounts . Still not worth the possible problem with the new CVT and other issues .
