New hybrid M5 dilemma and reasoning

So the new G90 M5 is hybrid, heavy and powerful.
I haven’t been on the forum since looking at the best oil recommendation, for 15 plus years… back then it was simple. RB26, warm weather climate, best HTHS possible. Check a few UOA and presto, go for a redline or similar 20w-50.

Now there are FE’s, OPF’s, BMW longlife specs, changing as often as the new iPhone, and the madness that suggests 27,000km for an oil change interval…

So I had my running in service today at 2,000 km and the application said that the next oil service is at 29,000… obviously I will be changing it more often, at some 7-8,000 since I live in a hot summer Mediterranean country.

Looking at the new FE specs, the HTHS is quite low, at around 3.0. I think LL04 non FE would require 3.5 or better and can also cater to vehicles with OPF’s. To make things even more complicated, the bearings have some sort of IVOX coating to provide lubrication if the engine is woken up while driving electric and the oil isn’t at the right temp and flowing. This coating also needs a compatible oil.

Any expert to offer some advice? I don’t even know what BMW put in the car at the service today, but am assuming it is efficiency and marketing oriented…

Thanks for reading.

LL04 would be perfectly fine, especially if it has an OPF. Irox coatings don't require an oil, it's the low-viscosity oil that requires the coating.

It's a pricey motor though, is it under warranty? Does the manual allow LL04-FE?

I would stick to what is recommended in order to preserve the warranty. The manual states to use only BMW LL-01 FE but allows a top off up to 1L with any API SL, SM or SN oil (pg 373). I don't think it is wise to mess around with such an expensive car.

As for the 27k km oil change interval, there must be a time component as well?

What the OP needs is the latest copy of the "Technically suitable engine oils for BMW Group
engines" product bulletin.

This will list the approved oil for their country, and the "techically suitable" alternative BMW approved oils that can be used. Usually there are higher HTHS oils approved one can select from. These can be dependant on whether the car has a gasoline particulate filter or not.

So I got the compatibility the wrong way around! Thanks for the info. Yes it has a 3 year warranty!

18 months if you can believe it…

I’ll ask for the approved oil list. Yes it has the GPF/OPF’s…
Thanks to everybody for the quick responses!

During warranty, whatever BMW recommends.
After warranty, LL04.

LL04 if your dealer is ok with it, LL12FE otherwise and change it as often as possible in these V8s.

What weight oil does the manual recommend?

Thank you.
Received this from the BMW dealer today. Dealer put the LL-12FE 0w-30 in the car.
It seems the LL-19FE is the spec to aim for as it has a higher HTHS rate, basically superseding the LL-04. Remains to be confirmed of course.

Agree with their spec and then LL04 or if the LL-19FE turns out to be decent.
When you say as often as possible, what do you mean? 5k miles 8k kilometers or even earlier in th summer?

Is that Ayios Nicolaos area? I'll probably be there in a month or so :)
Agros village.
Typical road you would drive to in the mountains.
Theres a few nice taverna's there too.

0W-30

5k miles not longer if possible on these hot V engines.

I would keep your changes at 10k km. Bmw has been cutting intervals down over the last decade but it's still too long.
