New Hearing Aids

I’m young (39) and need hearing aids. Have had hearing loss since I was a child and my profession has made it worse over the years. I have terrible tinnitus also. That is my biggest complaint. Had a hearing test and really struggle across all mid range frequencies (needs to be 70-80 or more decibels to hear it depending on exact frequency). However my cost is estimate 5700-6900 before insurance reimbursement. Which is only 1500. Not sure if it’s worth that kind of money. I have a consult at the end of the month to try them out, they’ll be programmed based on my hearing test. Still seems very steep

A big difference, but there is no cure. I put them in as soon as I get up and don't take them out until I go to bed.

Good to know. I have had tinnitus so long I’m almost accustomed to it but I notice it at all times. Especially in very quiet environments. That is the worst for it, at least for me.

I’ll post back when i have more details about what the hearing aids are

My dad is heck on hearing aids. Keeps losing or breaking them and he's tired spending money on them. A couple of friends have given him their VA hand-me-down hearing aids as the VA gives them new ones every few years, but he keeps procrastinating about taking them to the audiologist and having them setup up for him.

My poor mother is dying for someone to talk to. Hmm... maybe my dad isn't so lazy after all, LOL.

Had my consult yesterday. They are resound nexia 9 hearing aids. $6900 programmed to my hearing loss. They do offer a year free interest loan for them.

I was surprised how much of a difference they made trying them out. Still not sure if/when I’m going to go through with it.

My high end Wydex were 1/2 that cost and are fantastic. Maybe look around?

The problem is if I do look around and just buy a set they will not be tailored to my hearing loss. More or less an amplifier. I found a set of those nexia 9s online for like 4500 but I’m sure they won’t program them if I bring it to them

Do you have another Au.D. anywhere near you could see? My Wydex are completely programmable and are tuned for my hearing loss by an Au.D. If your hearing center only carries that brand, I'll bet you can find another audiologist that handles several brands.

You owe it to yourself to check out the offerings at COSTCO. They have several brands/models/styles and most cost between $1500 - $2500/ pair. Free audiologist exam (whether you purchase or not) and they fine tune the hearing aids to your hearing loss characteristics. 3 year warranty, including one free set of replacements if damaged or lost! Free tune ups and cleanings for 3 years too.

Do you have another Au.D. anywhere near you could see? My Wydex are completely programmable and are tuned for my hearing loss by an Au.D. If your hearing center only carries that brand, I'll bet you can find another audiologist that handles several brands.

From what I understand I can make temporary adjustments with my phone but in order to make permanent adjustments I need to bring them in. I’d have to do some research. The hearing aid place is in the same building as my ENT.

There is a 4 year warranty on these, and also loosing one pair is paid for

They claim these are basically the best on the market. And their pricing on them is the same if not slightly lower than others that carry them.

Yes, you'll be able to control volume and mixing for each hearing aid on the phone app. When I have to start turning mine up, either the filter or my ear canal is plugged with wax. Under normal conditions, I do not change the volume. When I first started wearing hearing aids, I would turn the volume down because they sounded so loud. The whole world sounds loud when you're not used to hearing the whole world. Give it 30 days and you'll be used to hearing the world again and you won't need to turn them down.

I'm so used to wearing mine that I have to touch the back of my ear to make sure they are still there. The sound reproduction quality is that good.

Mine are 3 years and I've never had a claim, but I almost did. One of our labs flicked one of them out of my ear and the other lab picked it up and started to gently chew on it. I didn't notice right away, but when I saw him chewing on it I immediately felt my ears and realized one of the hearing aids was gone. I got it out of his mouth and the only damage was to the cord going to the speaker. The audiologist replaced the speaker for free the next day. That's luck!

Me too. When I am around people talking , TVs or music etc..... I can almost forget. At least once in a while. Not very often.

It can be really noticed when wife goes to work and I turn off all the noise in the house to try and relax in total quiet. Situations like that can really make it tough.

My man cave (where I am now) is just across the hall from the closet where the central A/C blower is. It is a big Rheem unit that is very noisy and I can still hear it in my left ear over that noise. Some say there are several reason people end up with it.

For you old guys who are suffering from hearing loss...DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to get hearing aids in 2019. Mine recharge in a dock so no pain in the rear batteries to replace. Night and day difference. What brand did you get? I ended up with Sonos.

I ended up getting the hearing aids. Same ones I was quoted. Resound nexia 9. Had them for almost a month and will say that it has been life changing. I did not realize how bad my hearing actually was. Everything sounds different. Not one thing sounds the same. Everyone around me has been so used to my hearing loss that they spoke loud, and it has been an adjustment for all. It’s actually overwhelming at times the amount of sound stimulation. Especially with lots of people in a room.

Can you turn the volume down a bit on your phone app? I find it helps when I'm in a crowded room, else as you say it can be overwhelming. The over-stimulation will also get better over time as you get used to hearing the high tones again.

It has helped quite a bit without a doubt!

I have a noise filter in my phone if needed, it calms things down well. But that initial shock of the noise is overwhelming before any adjustments.

My hearing loss is all mid range frequency. My highs and lows are very good. It’s all in the middle ranges it’s terrible. They call it a “cookie cutter” hearing loss which is somewhat rare.
