Bought a new 10' ford fusion se with the flex fuel 3.0 v6. I'm not planning to use full syn in this car because the prices are outrageous. Motor will outlast the car with even average maintainance. I used to get over interested in oil when i first discovered this site so i have an idea what's popular here. I picked up some motorcraft synblend 5w20 for the first change at about 300 miles. I like castrol synblend5w20 and am interested in trying the new quakerstate 5w20. I had an awesome UOA with syntec blend in my focus a few years ago so i am leaning towards castrol and QS over motorcraft. Any info on oil quality would be appreciated. I'm sure they are all different from when i used them last. I will not be using e85 in the car if you were wondering. I know all the mineral and blends are really good oils just looking for something i may not know. Thanks

$20.50 is an outrageous price for 5 quarts of oil. It's not like you just bought a brand new car...

Yea, there is no way I will spend an extra $30 per year on my car to use a good synthetic. It's just not worth it. It's not like the car costs $20,000+, oh wait...

mobil 1 5quart jug-$23.50, motorcraft filter $3-$6, if you call that expensive, i havent a clue how you justified buying the car

Motorcraft 5W-20 is one of the best buys out their. $12 for $5 Qt. Of course Pennzoil Platinum at $20.50 - $5.00 (Instant rebate hung Pennzoil Products at Walmart) for 5 qt is only $3.50 more. You can also get QS Synthetic for $18.50 for 5 Qt at Walmart.

If you dont like WM then try the Sales and Promotions area to find ways to get it cheaper.

That said their is nothing wrong with Castrol as long as you are not part of the BP Witch Hunt.

For SOPUS I would go with Pennzoil over QS as its their Premiere Line.

Does the Fusion 3.0 take over 5.0 Qt? I know some of the new Ford V6s take 6 Qt.

The Motorcraft 5w-20 which you can get for $12-13 for 5 quarts will be just fine for your vehicle and it will last just as long in the SAME condition no matter what oil you put in it.

The Castrol GTX is also a excellent oil. Really in the 5w-20 all of them are excellent.

Don't let the members who can't quite grasp spending up to 44% MORE for something that does not matter influence your choice.

Between your preferred QS and Castrol Blend, I would recommend buying whichever is cheaper. If it meets the spec for your Fusion, that's all that really matters.

I have to agree though that Motorcraft at WM is hard to beat for the price(assuming you can/want to shop at WM).

Good luck with the Fusion, I love mine!

I think most of the synthetic blends besides Motorcraft don't make much sense. I would either go conventional or full synthetic. Aren't most blends less than 25% synthetic anyway?

Thats not that bad.

Now, sure, SOME oil is $10 for 5 Quarts and Some are $14 a 5-gallon Jug (These are Wal-Mart prices, i have not been able to beat Wal-Mart) .. however, if you feel it is a waste.. then That is how you feel.

btw, doesnt a nicely loaded new Fusion cost around $30,000? Why not go for the Mercury Milan?

Yup. $23.50 is DEFINITELY a Waste of Money.

Now, Pennzoil ULTRA at $30 a Quart.. Thats Ferrari Oil. And for a Ferrari, thats Fine too. (See Advertisements. Unless the SuperTech at WM is fine for a car like that for you. Im being Sarcastic.)

Stick with the MC or PYB in the winter as Castrol GTX's cold cranking numbers are a bit higher than the rest (for 5w-20). It is great in high temp situations, they had to sacrifice somewhere but its a good oil. You don't have to run synthetics to keep your engine in top shape. I only used synthetics in my Fusions in the winter (we touch -50C at times).

You get your letter in the mail about your trans yet?
Mom has an 09 with the same trans and it turned the ATF black in 50,000km and it shifts terribly now!!! Hopefully the re-programming they have for it works out.

Looks like he has a grasp on the difference between value and price. There is a difference.

Agreed! Does not sound like synthetic oil is needed. Like the OP said the engine will out last the rest of the car being fed dino on a good schedule. This board is funny. One time people will say your wasting your money with synthetics since dinos are so good now and then other times such as this thread they will give you a hard time since you dont want to spend the extra money. Anyways you will do fine with any of the oils you mentioned. Nice car!
