Just came from Wally world, Fram extended guards (the only Fram I use) have new packaging indicating they're for use with fully synthetic oil for up to 10,000 mile rather than the previous 7,000 miles. In several spots on the box it mentions to use synthetic oil and on the front of the box is states "for use with synthetic oil"--does anyone know what's going on here? Thanks!

10,000 on a Fram? Stop, you are killing me...

Extended guard is a decent oil filter with synthetic blend media and silicone valve. It will last 10K miles without problems.

If you have religious concerns about using Fram - OK, use something else, but this particular filter will easily last 10k miles.

Yeah the Extended Guard is built much better than the standard Fram. It only has a 96% efficiency rating though I believe. I don't know if they improved the filtering media. A Pureone has a higher efficiency and I think it is actually cheaper.

You got that right. EG efficiency is same as basic FRAM, not improved like ToughGuard (99%)or PureONE. Difference I believe is holding capacity.

Although the EG is synth blend .... I think the % of synth is high . Synth media can provide 'depth' ie. more holding capacity.

According to what I've read on BITOG, I think it's a well made filter. IIRC, unlike orange can and TG, in addition to synthetic media it also has metal end caps. With synthetic oil I would say you could go 10k if done within a 1 year time span.

Now here's the rub. They're $8.00 now at Wally World. For 6 bucks and change you could get a Pure One at AAP. That would be my choice.

There is nothing different between the x-guard and orange can filter, except the color of the can. I took both apart and the media is crud. It looks like it was made from a brown paper grocery bag. The x-guard has a silicon ADB valve.

You guys need to quit punishing yourselves

Yes, the "Extended Guard" version has construction quality that's second to none and for $7.97 at Wal Mart it's now a real contender. I'm not looking for ultra-fine filtration efficiency just long service interval durability (18,000 miles/12 months)and this filter suits my purposes very well. I previously used Wix for this interval with no problems but the Extended Guard is built even better than Wix with a medium that appears impossible to rip or rupture. This is the only Fram I will ever run.

The Extended Guard doesn't look bad from the photo ... construction looks to be up there with the better filters. What's the filtering efficiency claim by Fram on the EG?

I've got one to put on the Neon with PP.

Fram Extended Guard
7,000 Mile Oil Filter (some say 10,000; must be the 'newer' ones?)
Designed for longer change intervals.
Long life silicon anti-drainback valve.
Synthetic blend media backed by a metal screen for uniform pleating, durability and optimum oil flow.

70% More Capacity (vs. leading competitor's average).
96% Single Pass Efficiency (per SAE HS806 testing at Honeywell Test Laboratory 10-20 micron contaminant).
