Aside from the aluminum frame, that article just described a saturn s-series.

Quote:

The front-engine, front-drive Start features composite body panels with bonded in color, flush-mounted glass and an aerodynamic teardrop shape to reduce weight and wind resistance, thereby enhancing the vehicle’s overall fuel economy. The car’s spaceframe is made of lightweight aluminum and steel components.

Like the original Smart that had snap-on body panels that could be changed, the Start features a composite roof panel that can be easily removed and replaced as a customized accessory, changing the look of the car. While the Start has the look of a sleek hatchback, the rear glass is fixed and there is a traditional trunk lid for a separate luggage compartment.

Sorry looks like

Just make a smaller Fusion. Or Focus. Or atleast make it LOOK like those.

Worked good enough for the consumers to buy the Saturns.

Don't these little cars have to be hideous so everyone knows you are being "green"? That seems to be the trend...

External and interior look is very futuristic, either you like it or you hate it. I think the exterior design may be better or worse in person than in picture(s). If Ford can get 40+ MPG in city driving they will have a hit.

Not everybody needs a F-150 or Suburban or even a Neon. Should be great for hauling 1-2 people around town. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

It certainly looks better (and safer) than the SMART car. The turbo 3 sounds like it could be fun and frugal.

They toned down the Volt because the first one had the aerodynamics of a pickup. The Volt still looks nice though.

I am trying to imagine what it will look like with steel wheels, skinny tires, and more normal lights...
Not looking good so far in my mind, but if that shape is actually aerodynamic then it would be worthwhile, form following function is pretty rare these days...

That Ford thing made me throw up a little bit in my mouth. I feel sorry for anyone that has to drive a piece like that.

Ford is making some hideously styled vehicles these days; I can't think of a single one that looks halfway decent, except maybe the Edge and the Fusion.

The new Lincolns make me want to gouge my eyes out, their predecessors were a lot better looking.

I think Cadillac has some great looking vehicles...and sales are proving the public likse them, too.

But, of course, I realize that looks are a subjective matter.

They couldn't be a little more creative with the name? IIRC, Ford didn't want Toyota to call the Tundra the "T-150" because it was too close to F-150. Start is one letter away from being Smart.

I'm not a big fan of the looks either. It's not a car I would want to drive. To each their own though.

Agreed.
The Fusion is marginally acceptable.
The Mustang and Ranger are the only 1/2 decent vehicles they have left. (imho)
Even the once great F series has gotten pretty lame.

(just for the record, i am a "Ford guy")
One reason i drive older scrap.
I'd hate walkin out to the garage and wincing at the site of the ugly pos that i'm making payments on so i can drive to work.

Ford (and detroit in general) needs to come out with something attractive.
Something the everyday man can enjoy.
Seems the automakers are catering mostly to the eco-nazis, and the soccermom crowds.

Mostly.

Ugly little car in my opinion. But ya know what? Ugly sells. I shouldn't need to name them but PLENTY of ugly vehicles sell fairly well. The younger crowd, greenies, and those that want to get noticed will buy it. I am a fan of any kind of vehicle I find interesting....but the looks of this one is horrid. Not as bad as the Nissan Cube though.
