A friend of mine that works at the Cummins plant sent this to me.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 23, 2007) – Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) today unveiled the strongest, cleanest, quietest best-in-class 2007 Cummins Turbo Diesel. Leapfrogging the competition, the Cummins 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel engine, used exclusively in Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickup trucks, has increased displacement providing increased horsepower and torque while achieving the world’s lowest 2010 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) NOx standard a full three years ahead of the requirements.

The new Turbo Diesel engines are in full production at the Cummins MidRange Engine Plant in Columbus, Ind. Cummins has been the sole supplier of diesel engines for the Dodge Ram since 1988, shipping approximately 160,000 engines in 2006.

Cummins is the first diesel engine manufacturer to have a product certified to the 2010 EPA heavy-duty engine standards for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions, making it the cleanest heavy-duty diesel engine available in North America. The 2010 EPA standards for NOx (0.2g) and PM (0.01g) represent a more than 90 percent reduction in each pollutant, compared to the 2004 standards.

“The application of the right technology on the Dodge Ram is an extension of the joint clean diesel development work Cummins and DaimlerChrysler have performed together for nearly two decades,” said Cummins President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Loughrey. “The new best-in-class Cummins Turbo Diesel and the Dodge Ram will provide the strongest, cleanest, quietest solution for heavy-duty pickup truck customers.”

“This new technology is a significant validation of the industry’s ability to meet the EPA’s 2010 clean diesel standards. These innovations help power our economy and drive our environmental successes,” said Bill Wehrum, EPA’s Acting Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation.

Cummins announced this news prior to the Washington Auto Show in conjunction with DaimlerChrysler and the EPA.

Strongest. The increased displacement of the 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel – enabling an increase in horsepower and torque while maintaining fuel economy – will provide Dodge Ram customers with better engine performance without sacrificing the reliability and durability that have become synonymous with Cummins. Increased vehicle control and lower operating cost are both delivered on the new 6.7L Turbo Diesel with the addition of an integrated exhaust brake option, providing outstanding braking performance.

Cleanest. Combining advanced in-cylinder technologies, including a Bosch flexible 1800-bar High Pressure Common Rail fuel system with Cummins next-generation cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT™), plus advanced exhaust aftertreatment technology, every Dodge Ram pickup will comply with the 2010 NOx and PM emissions standards. The advanced aftertreatment system includes a close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst, a NOx adsorber catalyst and a combined diesel oxidation/particulate filter. The engine also incorporates a proprietary closed crankcase ventilation (CCV) system to eliminate crankcase fumes and “driveway drips.” These advanced technologies require the use of Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel in order to meet the tough 2007 and 2010 regulations.

Quietest. The 2007 Cummins Turbo Diesel achieves a 50 percent noise reduction over the previous model, even with the increase in power and torque. The combination of reduced combustion noise, a low-noise VGT, optimized fuel timing/delivery, reduced-noise accessory drive pulleys and block side shields all contribute to this significant noise reduction.

Since 1988, Cummins and Dodge have collaborated to ship over 1.5 million Heavy Duty diesel pickup trucks and today enjoy around 30 percent market share in this highly competitive market in North America.
 
If Dodge has 30% market share, FOMOCO must have 60%,,cause GM isn't even in the running, despite having a pretty good package. Their old diesels were junk.

Been wondering how long it would be before this old warhorse engine got common rail.

The ferd super duty market share shrinks more every day. I guess that happens when you scrap a good engine (7.3) and replace it with a not-so-good engine (6.0). I realize that ferd couldn't get the 7.3 to meet emissions requirements which is why they went to the 6.0 PSD.

I'm speaking from experience on the 6.0, and yes I'm a little bitter with a truck that is in the crapper when it comes to resale value.

Cummins went to common rail in '03.
 
Well, although they mention "economy" ..every evolution of the Cummins engine has been less economical out of the box then the original. Now they're going to 6.7L?? Are they going to even attempt to approach the 20+ mpg rating that they had in the early models? I say, probably not. Again ..real diesels are just moved more and more out of the hands of those who want them ..and they will buy more affordable gasoline engines that suck fuel like crazy.

I'm bitter too ..and I haven't owned a diesel since 1981 and never one over 2.5 liters.

How true Gary.

The emissions police continue to make a diesel engine more and more like a gas burner....diesel fuel is now no longer dirty and stinky like it used to be, but the flip side to that is very poor lubricity which is hard on injectors. There are now EGR's added and extra combustion events that dump soot back into the intake, which is good for the environment but bad on the engine. All of the extra emissions add-ons tax the fuel economy. 20+ MPG on diesel pickups is a thing of the past unfortunately.

I would love to have a 12V Cummins in my '06, but those days are long gone. What are us diesel heads supposed to do? Just got to evolve I guess

It's because the market demands higher output, not better fuel economy. Dodge doesn't even offer a 'standard output' engine anymore because no one wants one. A very popular option after buying a new higher output model is to get a 'box' for it, to further increase the output. I'd like to see a box that increases fuel economy and engine life but there doesn't seem to be much of a market for it.
 
At the same time, MB has been able to go from their 5-cyl, 3.0L 130 hp/177 lb-ft, 30 MPG diesel in their early 1980s midline sedans, to a 6-cyl, 3.2L, 201hp/369 lb-ft, 37 MPG diesel in their current E320CDI.

Apples to oranges compared to pickups, but I have to think that more than just a little of the cause of the loss of the 20 MPG pickup, is more than mere emissions, but is that Joe Blow wants to see big displacement and big hp/torque numbers, so that is what is given to make the sale. To meet these two requirements causes the need for a new engine, new engineering, and then the combination of power lust with emissions requirements = cost.

maybe an engine redesign was necessary to meet the new green requirements... there still well could have been a very capable, higher MPG engine produced to put into the truck... but without that 6.7 number, it wont sell well...

The early first generation Cummins 5.9s with their crude (in comparison) mechanical injection pumps were de-tuned for integration into the Dodge platform. Dodge had no idea how they were going to hold up in the field - literally, since that is where many were and still are used pulling 10-ton livestock trailers. So they over engineered the drivelines with a massive 13" Sachs clutch, Spicer 1410 U-joints and other beefy parts along with de-tuning the injection pump to a 160hp rating to basically overcompensate for this percieved liability. The early Dodges can be tweaked for relatively little $ to match the current engines in HP, increase fuel mileage and far exceeed current torque ratings.

Ironic how the the situation seems oddly reversed. More power for less reliability and fuel economy.
