Today, I was given my new company vehicle. Like my previous MKZ, I can take that one home and use it while off work. I'm not sure how I feel about it. They gave me a brand-new black Aviator and it's massive around town. My garage is barely big enough for it and I may have to get one of my other two vehicles out. Or I can leave the Aviator outside where it will bother the neighbors and where tree sap and birds will get it dirty. I do like the ultra-adjustable seats. I'll probably have all the adjustment options figured out in a week. The 20 gallon tank should be good for at least 400 miles. I better read the 645 page manual this weekend.

Did you have any say in what they provide you ? Sounds like you didn't....

I'd park it outside. No way I'd leave my personal vehicles outside to accommodate this.

Agreed. It's not your car. Let the birds poop on it and expense the car wash.

Who pays for the gas? i.e. can you take a road trip on the company's dime?

I pay $120 a month for unlimited personal mileage for my company vehicle, company pays for gas.

Had this discussion at work about company cars. With mixed driving, even 50/50, no one disputes that the company will pay for gas. My personal opinion was if I took the car on vacation, my conscience would in no way allow me to use the company credit card to put gas in it in this case. At the end of the day, it's 100% up to the company though.

Funny story that's related to this type of scenario.... A guy that we deal with told us at a former employer, they gave him a gas card for work use but he used his personal vehicle in return. He filled it up once on a Friday, went places, etc, etc and filled up again on Monday. The company asked "were you visiting customers and making sales calls on Saturday and Sunday?". He wasn't. They told him not to do it again.... So again, it's just company policy in the end.

vavavroom, do you have the opertunity to buy your current company car when it is time to get another company car?

I have a friend who gets a company car every(oh, IDK), every 2-3 years. The company buys, not leases their vehicles for managers & directors so, these vehicles don't need to be turned in from a lease. The vehicles are all maintained on the company's dime including fuel. IDK if the company pays for fuel for personal use but, they may.

He has the opertunity to buy his current company car when it's time for another. He knows beforehand when he'll be needing another personal vehicle soon, either for himself or his spouse and he has first dibs on buying the vehicle. Otherwise, the cars go on sale to other employees next.

And if he likes the vehicle he's driving and happens to be needing a vehicle soon, he makes sure this car gets the best service & maintenance while it's in his possession including all fluid changes, new brakes, new tires, anything & everything even has the car detailed, prior to taking ownership.

And he lives in GA where the vehicles never see salt. He even negotiates(or tries) do deal on the used purchase price. Sometime it works, other time the price is set. And like vavavroom, these vehicles are higher end vehicles.

What a deal! What a racket!

Nope, while i've referred to my work car as my company car on here it's actually a government agency owned vehicle. For the unmarked vehicles, when they're rotated out of the fleet they go to another city office like dpw dept of public works or water/sewer, etc. 2015 Ford Fusion, nothing special but quite reliable, nothing but regular maintenance for the time it's been assigned to me, bulk oil and filters by contract maintenance garage.

On workdays and on regular days off no questions are asked and gas is covered.

After two to three years the vehicles are demoted but remain in the fleet for another couple years. Then they get sold off. Although they have been maintained well they are never the kind of vehicle I'd like to own privately.

Nice company car.

I had that luxury many years ago (but it wasn't a luxury car) - company provided car from 1984 to 1992. All maint and LOF etc... covered.
We had a 'policy' of 150 miles personal use / week. I used it for all kinds of errands and around town stuff as if it were mine and not abusing policy. A few times, I towed our pop-up camper on weekend outings.
A few years into it, big Gov wanted to tax us on our personal use as related to home to office and any other personal use. We discovered (or decided) we could go from home to a customer , then to the office and pretty much negate the tax but I think most of us felt we'd flag attention by doing so and might be better off to document 10 or 15 miles of personal use a week just to make then happy.
Having a free set of wheels is a very cool benefit. We all had the option if we chose, to buy out the car after 45 to 60 k miles or 2 years old. If my kids were 10 to 12 years older at the time, it would have probably been their first car.

Nice company car! At an old job I had the ability to buy my company vehicles. Bought my Impala after they had just put new tires and brakes all around on it and sold it for a $3,000 profit a few weeks later. The pricing was inconsistent when dealing with the company so that was the only one I bought.

Remember that thread about a guy getting his house taken away because he drove an antique truck that could be viewed from the road?

Reason why is because his neighbors are this guy

Street parking is limited and most households have at least two cars. Lots of families with older kids have four cars. My garage is big enough for three medium size vehicles. Only a medium size vehicle will fit between driveways. Larger vehicles will block either driveway. I can block my own driveway but I may want to use the vehicle in the garage that's now blocked. I can park across the street which is lined with tall trees populated by birds but especially my black vehicle is going to look a mess.

I finally got to use the vehicle. I spent 8 hours driving it today. It is comfortable, quiet, and sure-footed. Despite all the driving I'm pretty well-rested and I don't have leg or back pain. I had 2 passengers and they seemed also pretty comfy.
