New car, first oil change --- when?

Ok, bought my new 2013 Nissan Juke bout a little over a month ago. Owners manual says for the first oil change I can do it at a regular interval (for me 3k/3mo).... I bought the car with 154 miles on it. Before I bought it, I test drove it about 5 weeks prior and it only had 98 miles on it. My question is this:

1- Factory filled oil has been sitting in my Juke for who knows how long and I've read posts on here that FF is fine. Regular oil changes ask for 3mo/3k miles, so should I just do the oil change since its been 3 months since my initial test drive?

2- Does this even matter? Maybe I should just wait til I hit 3k/3mo mark??

Sitting doesn't seem to hurt anything based on the samples I've seen here.

Two schools of thought on initial oil change. The most prevalent is that you should change it right away to get rid of the iron filings left over from the manufacturing process.

The other is you ought to let the first change go right to edge because there are left over lubricants from the manufacturing process that are helpful to break-in. That's the official line of Honda anyway, who ought to know a thing or two about making durable gas engines.

Personally, I waffled. I changed at 4,500 miles.

In the great scheme of things, it probably doesn't matter much.

For the purposes of that nice factory warranty (do what you like) just maintain documentation and use the correct weights etc.

to you Q. Im not in the camp of long OCI's for that factory fill, 3,000 and its just piece of mind that the metal filled filter and the oil are getting flushed out of there.. two pennies.

Sitting Is no harm. Change at 3k, no worries.

You will be fine if you change early. You will also be fine if you follow your owner's manual.

I changed mine at 5K- I couldn't bear to go 8K on FF Dino. Stupid, but I slept better at night. I changed hers at the 6 month mark- factory requirement- which was 3900 miles.

Especially a Honda. It gets shipped with special break in oil.

My 2014 Subaru states to go 3,000 miles on the factory fill, then the second change at 7,500 miles (4,500 OCI), then at 7,500 OCI's after that. The first two fills are shorter, then 7,500 after that. It does not have an oil life monitor or anything of that nature like my Honda does. I like changing at a set interval, I have no idea why though.....maybe OCD.

Agreed 100%. I'm not adapting to a MM/oil life computer well.

Seriously, yes, change the factory fill early (except Honda/Acura, the only ones as far as we know). Then follow your owner's manual for the oil drain intervals. You'll save a lot of money if you send a sample for analysis to determine the right drain interval for that car and your driving if it'll make you feel better. The $25 cost of the analysis will be repaid many times in good oil that you got more miles out of, not dumped. I recently sold a turbo Volvo with 202,000 miles, and the engine still ran smooth & strong. Some of the factory machining marks were still visible on the cam lobes. And I did 10,000 mile oil & filter changes.

I changed FF of my cars at normal schedule, I actually passed the first scheduled oil change of the E430 by about 5-600 miles. The oil life monitor of the E430 (it's called FSS) counts down from 10k miles and it displayed warning about oil change when the mile went to 6-800 miles, I had it down to minus 5-600 miles before I had a chance to make appointment with dealer to do the free oil change.

All the cars didn't have any oil relate engine problem, the LS400 engine with more than 300k miles still running great, oil consumption is about 1/2 quart per 3-4k miles just as when it was new.

I'm from that camp too, only I do a shorter first OCI, and took some heat for that here. From what I've read cars last a long time either way. Obviously opinions vary.

Benefits of getting the extra debris (from the engine breaking in) out are greater than any provided by the special additives (if any?) in the original factory fill.

Some folks add a can of Lubro Moly MoS2 to the oil after the first oil change. I didn't and just change the oil at earlier than normal intervals during the first 10K when the piston rings are seating. NONE of the 12 new vehicles I've done this to have used any noticeable oil between servicing.
