New car, do you trade in or sell yourself?

We all know you can get more money selling yourself but many don't want the hassle. What about you?

I hate the idea of getting raped by the stealership by trading it in but also hate the hassle of selling.

Therefore my single self has 4 cars in the driveway right now just sitting and I only drive one. Meanwhile I’m procrastinating.

I've privately sold one car in my life. I listed it on cars.com and found a buyer who paid the asking price within one week. I was honestly surprised at how smooth the process went.

My folks live on a busy state highway. Clean it up good, put a fair price on it, park it in the front yard... and it'll be gone shortly.

Their '99 Park Avenue sold in 6 hours, and their Town and Country sold in 18 hours.

When you trade in the old car the amount of the trade reduces your tax on the purchase of a new car

When I buy a car, the one it's replacing is usually not worth selling. So I usually end up taking it to a junkyard and get about $300. I wouldn't get that much more from a private sale, not to mention the effort it takes to sell a car privately.

Sell myself?

You mean Midnight Cowboy stylee?

That'd take me a while.

Fortunate, then, that I have very little interest in new cars.

Sell the thing myself.
The tire kickers and no-shows temper my personality.
I actually love the phone calls.

EX: '96 Chevrolet Caprice Classic w LOW mileage. People called to reminisce over their own Caprices. It was quite real.

I usually sell it to a private party unless there's a problem with it that can be masked...then depending on value, I take it to the stealership for a trade-in. I would never sell a problem car to another individual...but dealers are fair game.

Well, four of the cars we've owned over the past thirty four years were sold to State Farm since my sons totaled them. I actually made money on one of them so I guess I bought it right.
I've sold a number of cars to private parties just on word of mouth and I've junked a few.
I've also traded an old W115 Benz on a later W123 with a little boot from me in the game to a guy who made his living buying and selling old Benzes. I got his name from another guy who did the same.
I've never traded a car to a dealer on a purchase, although I can understand the hassle factor involved in private party sales that causes some to just give in and do so.

Niche cars I sell privately, commodity cars I trade.

I sold my Phaeton privately, and will sell the 911 privately when the time comes.

The X3 was traded on the Volvo, and the Volvo was traded on the Q7. It just made more sense that way - and I got the money I wanted from the dealership each time.

I sell it and always get more than the trade in offered me. In most cases I have taken better care and or treated with CarWell and wait for someone to appreciate a vehicle in better condition than avg.

I once traded in a VW diesel Rabbit with cracked block. It ran but you ended with oil jello in the cooling system. I provided no details to dealer, it was up to him to look it over. Unsure if he knew or cared.

I'm surprised you got rid of your VW.

No way I'd sell that sweet 911.

I used to sell them but lately I have been lazy and traded with the dealer. I know I could have gotten more money with a private party sale but honestly, I don't want some of the local rednecks kickin' tires and casing my property.

At one time a friend owned a business on a main thoroughfare through a neighboring city. I sold quite a few off his lot and did not have to worry about undesirables around my house.

I'm surprised too. The right offer came along and I let it go. I miss it... C'est la vie

Right now I have my eye on a green Turbo. Depending on how that shakes out I may cut the Carrera loose. My marriage is strong, but I don't think it'd survive my wife seeing TWO 911's in the garage!

Look for a black turbo.

I've only ever sold privately, I'm only 23 so it's not like I've been doing it for countless years.

Last year I bought my Sonata and parked my Camry. 14 months later, it's still sitting in the street in front of my house... I don't know what to do with it. It's such a good car, but not worth much so it won't really benefit me to sell it.

depends:
-'97 chrysler concorde: insurance; less than what I paid for it less then 2 months before... :-(
-'95 mercury mystique and '95 hyundai accent: private, off-course low-balled, stories, etc etc :-(
-'04 hyundai elantra: dealer trade; cheap, but did not have the time for tire-kickers :-(
-'08 toyota yaris: Carmax; best deal ever for a 10 years old car. brought the total purchase of the GSW to an amazing number
