Didn't I say it was a Toyota filter, with the model number? The purpose of the Toyota pics here is because two posts above someone claimed Toyota filters have the wide gap too sometimes, beside the crimp. The crimping on the Toyota is on the inside. I have never seen the Toyota filter with wide gaps, they don't pot the element in glue, much easier to keep things even.

I was replying to Manofsteel, as per where it says Re: Manofsteel in my message header. He mentioned "perfectly fine" pleat spacing and referenced Bosch. I only see one filter in the thread with perfectly fine pleat spacing, and it's not a Bosch, which had horrible pleat spacing, so I was guessing he didn't know what brand the filter with the perfectly spaced pleats was. Now, since you posted the pictures, I would assume that you knew perfectly well that you had a Toyota filter, so the comment that it was a Toyota filter was not meant for you.

I see, sorry, thank you. I do want to see the claimed wide pleats by the seam on a Toyota filter, said by someone else, or was it just talking by them. Never will understand someone, manosteel, seeing the Toyota pictures and then trying to say they are the Bosch, doesn't compute.

Lol hence, I said the bosh filter. Otherwise I wouldn't have needed to address it by name.
The Toyota filter looks fine too though.
Maybe your not as intelligent as you like to think you are???

Here's the pics from a new Toyota OEM filter for the Tundra. You can clearly see that directly on the outside of the where the pleat ends are joined, there's almost twice as much glue used as any of the other pleats. I have seen this now on multiple filters. Some are more obvious than others, but i don't think it's purely by accident, or simply a Quality control issue, that the pleats seem to have wider spacing exactly where the pleat ends meet. They are obviously using more glue/resin there for whatever reason, and sometime that creates the effect of wider pleat spacing at the joints.

Perhaps your eyesight needs to be checked, or your definition of perfectly spaced needs to be challenged. I see a Bosch filter here with uneven pleat spacing, contrary to your assertion of perfectly spaced pleats. And, the only filter with anything resembling perfect pleat spacing in this thread is the Toyota.

Take the sand out of your eyes before you make such far fetched assertions.

It is my belief that when the pleat spacing is too large you can experience a tear just like this one.

https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/3996671/1

I have since cut an unused Motorcraft filter and the photos show wide pleats near the splice as well as rust.

I submit that Purolator quality is not what it once was. And Purolator has not fixed the problem.

I also believe the filter at the top of the thread might tear within the vehicle manufacturer's service interval.

The only real way to tell is to run the filter and cut it at end of a normal oil change.

I believe car51 when he says he has cut filters that were torn.

So for car51 and myself it is time to use something else.

WellOiled: very well said. I don't think I missed the tears on the tons of "made by Puro" filters as some here want to think. I've said it once and I will continue to say it: Purolator is TOTAL JUNK!

Manofsteel,

Garak has forgotten more about oil, oil filters and lubrication than I will ever know.

Therefore, I value his input and advice.

Manofsteel joined 02/03/16 and has made 45 posts.

Garak joined 12/05/09 and has made 16877 posts.

If Garak makes a suggestion he has a high probability of being right.

I think some Purolator made filters are fine because the geometry is different and therefore the stresses on the media are different and they do no tear. TOTAL JUNK is a bit strong. I have seen some used filter analysis of various Purolator made filters and the were perfectly good. Others not so good.

For my application, the Motorcraft FL-820S is junk. A different application and the FL-820S may be fine.

WellOiled: I agree with that sir. Amazing that a filter like Performax, Pennzoil and some Valvoline filters are real nice, then others just.....dunno.

I personally have decided to look at the filter in the application it is used in. That includes A lot of details like oil viscosity, the climate, driving conditions and number of cold starts.

If the filter does not perform then it's time to move on to something better.

I would almost bet the PF1250 will out perform the FL820S in my application for 5000 miles.

I have run 100s of AC Delcos and no issues. And it is an eCore that people bash all the time.

I like to cut a new one first and then decide if I want to actually use one. The used filter analysis is the acid test.

Thank you for your guys' kind words. Manofsand has simply decided to ignore, or doesn't know, that I've been a Purolator fan for a long time. The Bosch Premium with a silicone ADBV, excellent efficiency, and $5 price was pretty hard to beat. I used a lot of Motorcrafts over the years. I get very annoyed when a company takes a product I really enjoy using and destroys it, particularly to the point I have to go elsewhere.

He should also notice that I've been quite merciless to other companies I support when they do something I consider stupid or wrong headed. Shell has gotten a heck of a lot more grief out of me over the past few years than Purolator ever has, and I still use and love Shell products. But, when they do something I disagree with, I'm going to point it out.

Purolator has made in next to impossible to buy a filter from them, without going into the synthetic side of things, and then they're at the mercy of competitors' better pricing. Similarly, Shell has made it next to impossible to buy an A3/B4 lubricant from them, without going out on safari and with a fat wallet.

But, no, it's all personal and sockpuppets will fix everything.
