it just seems that the new instructions would achieve better results: more auto-rx in the oil + more time in the oil= better results.
Anyone else agree?
Keep in mind that the original Auto-Rx instructions (IIRC) had lower mileage limits. This was altered to take in advances in oil formulations that required more time for Auto-Rx to do its thing. There has been some blurring of what's what in semi-synths and whatnot ..and (my opinion) the mileage has been lengthened again.
Still, if you've got heavy sludge, I'd be swapping out filters before swapping out the sump.
In any event, I think Frank has tried, in all cases, to use the K.I.S.S. method. Look at how much questioning occurs with the simple set of instructions that he already provides. Literally tens of thousands of questions over the 5 years that I've been here ...all for instructions that are pretty darn simple if you read them (admittedly, I'm one of those who subscribes to the shameful notion that instructions are only used when all else fails). Most of them fall along the lines of needed reassurance. Occasionally you would get someone panicking about a few added ticks or clicks during a rinse cycle ..or someone reporting a lame oil sender. Stuff that's alarming ..but not atypical in the treatments ...but mostly the same rehashed reassurance type questions.
Now imagine if there were 4 sets of instructions that varied depending on what oil you used
Tens of thousands X 4
So, now Frank figures (maybe - my speculation) that the mileage figure needs updating both for new formulations and enough collected empirical data showing that longer treatment lengths don't have a donwside.....and now all those who did it the old way are wondering if they sold themselves short by not leaving it in long enough.
Also keep in mind that one of the things that makes Auto-Rx a niche product is that it takes as long as it does. Most of the rolling consumer population who needs such a product wants results in 5 minutes and wants to spend $5. The mileage standards made some reluctant to wait that long. Patience is something we're not noted for as consumers.
There's plenty of evidence that the old instructions worked just fine. This is to cover the fringe without incurring issue(s) in an attempt to provide the absolute best bang for the buck. (again, my opinion).
