New 2015 F250 w/ 6.7L - Oil Choices?

I bought a new F250 today (retiring my F150) and so the obligatory question arises - which oil?

The OM states that I can use 5W-40 (synthetic), 10W-30 (conventional or blend), 15W-40 (conventional). I am thinking Shell Rotella in either 5W-40 or 15W-40. What are your experiences with Rotella or with any other diesel oil?

Temps can range from -15F (in Colorado where we go a few times per year) to 110F (in Texas/Wyoming/Montana); but a good average would be 75-100 in summer and 35-55 in winter. The new trailer will be 12,545 empty (I will need to load it and have it weighed to get the actual).

Nice truck!! If that were mine it would literally be a cointoss between Rotella T6 or M1 TDT. I would consider the Motorcraft 5W40, but it is pretty expensive even at employee cost.

That 6.7 will flatten the grades. That truck is super!

My fiancee owns a 2003 F350 with the 6.0 diesel and has run 10W-30 Motorcraft diesel oil the entire time. She bought this truck new. Engine runs good and has never leaked or used oil.

This. This would be the oil I'd use as well.

Valvoline Premium Blue 10w30 SynBlend. Catch it on sale a few times a year at NAPA, 11.99 a gallon. Lots of Powerstrokes on 10w30 here, doing very well.

Amsoil OE Diesel 10w30!


Now is the time for Merk to come along and ask if you retired your F150 becuase all of those long oil drains caused heavy varinsh and sludge

With that mass and temperature range, a 5w-40 is a no brainer. Dont think you can go wrong with any of the majors...

LOL - as a parting shot, I probably should have pulled a valve cover and photographed the valve train, but having used a synthetic all its life save for 2 MS5K OCs, I am confident it was clean.

Thanks! I will leave the spreadsheet online for anyone to review. It was a good run--that FX4 went coast to coast and border to border. In its 158K miles, outside of wear items (belts, brakes, and shocks) the only mechanical issue happened at 21K and that was the RMS started leaking. After it was changed, it never leaked again. Someone will get a nice used F150...

Rotella 10w-30 TP. I can personally attest that extreme temps and heavy hauling are within the capability of the TP.

I presume you will stick with the IOLM. As Ronald used to say ... Trust but Verify.
Run the dino 10w-30 and run some UOAs.
You'll be impressed.

I have a '15 with just about 22,000 mi. currently. I have so far changed by the IOLM and have a UOA posted in the HDEO UOA section. I am using 10w-30 and results came back excellent. Per IOLM it looks as if this OC will push 10,000 mi. and I will post UOA data once its changed.
