Jeez, Stainless, in a GM V6, pushrods, 0W20, aren't you inviting disaster?

Ummmm, shoot.

I haven't been here long enough to know if you are making a joke, or if you are serious. I ummmmm, don't really know.

Is that bad?

BAD??? BAD??? My gosh, man!! You have no idea what's going on there. It's worse than Di-Hydrogen Monoxide poisoning

..but who am I to tell another man how to conduct his affairs?? You're ultimately the one who has to answer for them. Not me. I wish you the best of luck.

Does GM spec 5W20 for anything yet?

The Saturn Vue that had the Honda engine.

For what it is worth. I am currently running Mobil 1 0W-20 in my 98 Lumina 3.1 V6 with 146,000 miles on it. The Mobil 1 0W-20 has the yellow tag that says 0W-20, & I found it at walmart. It also says:
Quote:

-Provides outstanding engine protection and fuel economy for newer vehicles including Hybrids.
- Reduces friction resulting in the best fuel economy of any Mobil 1 viscosity

I bought it because it has been in the single digits during the day, and less than 0 at night. I wanted the best COLD flowing oil I could find.

Mobil 1 0w30 meets or exceeds the following industry specifications:
  • ACEA A1, B1
  • API SM, SL, SJ, EC, CF
  • ILSAC GF-4
  • Ford WSM2C929-A
  • General Motors GM4718M, GM6094M
  • Chrysler MS-6395

  • For future reference, Mobil 1 0w30 are readily available at Napa Auto Parts.

Yup, ignorance and arrogance are an amazingly powerful combination -- sort of like that combination of fluids that a skunk can expel from its backside. . .

This guy has appeared frequently across cyberspace (assuming that there's only one "sandman" with such opinions about "thin" oil). If you dare to disagree with him, you'll quickly find out that he's not current on his rabies shots.

My Dodge 2500 Hemi, I use Castrol GTX 5w30 or 10w30, even though its new under warranty and calls for 5w20, I checked around, called Dodge, read everything I could and decided I was more comfortable with a 30 wt, but that what it comes down to, use what you are comfortable with and there is a 99.9% chance it wont make a bit of difference except at the gas pump.

Internet rumor has it that the Hemi MDS system needs 5W20 to work properly.

I lived through the 5w20 era's with GM and Adam Opel vechiles so I am against any recomendations for anything less then 10W30.

Have I pulled a rip van winkle here? Aside from early mobil 1 I don't recall 5w20 coming and going before it came back again.

LOL at the idjit who worries becuase his oil pressure gauge actually moves.

5w-20 has been spec'd for a long time. I don't recall when it was first spec'd ..but it was at least as far back as the early 70's in some engines in some environments. You're right in that it wasn't widely available ..on the store shelf. I imagine someone in Canada would have found it without too much difficulty.

You'd think that would be true, because a lot of Canada is pretty cold, but here in Toronto it is still not that easy to find 5w20 even to this day. A lot of stores will only carry the 5w30 and 10w30 version of an oil. I remember a time not too long ago (2-3 yrs ago) when the only 5w20 you could find in Walmart or Canadian Tire was conventional Pennzoil and there were no synthetic 5w20s anywhere to be found. And that Pennzoil 5w20 was $4 a quart, versus $1.50 to $2 for the 5w30 and 10w30 conventionals at the time.
