Never seen an engine pass 120,000 miles with 5w-20

I have been impressed by the results some have posted with 5w20 use (Specifically motorcraft 5w20) in some Ford V8/V10 Turbo-Deisel engines.

interesting
if you have those links I'm interested
not aware of 5W20 diesel spec oils

When I got a 1997 GM 5.7L vehicle I was shocked to read the manual "Do not use 20W50 or other viscosity" nothing more than 30 weight. It has only 5 quart capacity and a filter the size of a soup can. I thought OK...we will see...proceeding to use 5-10W30 for 100K miles, mainly 3k OCI with FRAM filters.

Its now at 138K and consumes zero oil in 3000 miles.

A year ago I got a Ford Duratec that uses 5W20, so far I have been using the MC 5W20 at 3K OCI and just switched to Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 at 5K OCI. I'm confident I can duplicate the above performance with consistent maintenance.

120K life ?... you've got to be kidding...Hondas spec 5W20...who has more gas engines at 200-300K ?

I still chuckle as to how some people think a 5w20 cannot protect an engine, but yet they feel 5w30 will. They don't realize how most 5w30 conventionals have been thinning out to a 20wt all these years anyhow! And not only that, but the cold start viscosity of 5w30 is thicker than 5w20, and most likely gets even thicker with age, so a typical conventional 5w30 after a couple of thousand miles might actually be more like a 10w20!

Exactly. I was thinking the same thing, but being somewhat of a "newbie" I was hesitant to say it.

I think the sandman's motto is:
"Don't confuse me with facts, my mind is made up"

Well, don't be too hard on them. It's not like we walked in here being veterans of BITOG

I always admired the newer members that lurked for a while before they posted and came right out and expressed any confusion that they couldn't straighten out from reading. It's not a natural act for our egos. No matter what our level of understanding ..there's an insatiable need to be the master of one's kingdom. It's sorta along the lines of the "When all else fails, read the instructions" American tradition. Just about everyone that I know feels that they can figure their way out of whatever box that they find themselves in...because they like to view themselves as intelligent creatures of high reasoning capability. Surrender is not in their creed. Where they don't have true understanding ..they tend to create a mythos that's satisfies the equations that they envision get them from point A to point B. Since these myths are of their own creation ..or adopted from others of like understanding ..they all make sense.

..but ..that all being said ..it's always fun to watch from this relatively lofty perch

We didn't come here as experts either. Sandman deserves his props.

I think a few things, 1st I think Ford came up with the 5w20 scheme for CAFE and because they were the only people making that grade so if you bought a new car and were warranty scared , you used their oil, Therefore they sold alot of oil in the early years. 2and, I think they did do testing and Their motors as Hondas and are probably better suited for this oil than most( I think Dodge is just trying to get any gas mileage they can get, they have to be hurting on the CAFE). 3rd I think that oil is so good now and engines are so versitle as well as forgiving, you could run 5w20 to 20w50 and as long as did regular oil changes, hi-milage wouldnt become a problem. Ive noticed more 5w20 people are more conscience about oil changes also. My wifes lincoln 4.6 I use 5w20 MC, but that was cause it had a service agreement and that was what Ford was "SUPPOSED" to be using, Iam planning on switching over to Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 on the next OC and going 5000/6 mon. OC. My Dodge 2500 Hemi, I use Castrol GTX 5w30 or 10w30, even though its new under warranty and calls for 5w20, I checked around, called Dodge, read everything I could and decided I was more comfortable with a 30 wt, but that what it comes down to, use what you are comfortable with and there is a 99.9% chance it wont make a bit of difference except at the gas pump.

True, but most of us didn't represent ourselves as being "experts" on the subject. Remember what I quoted Sandman saying in a previous post:
"I was also a tech!!I am also college educated. I have one degree in Aerospace Technology and one in Marketing. I am also in the auto industry and give tech. advise to dealerships, legal departments, and employee's."

Wow, I hope he doesn't try and give me advise.

I will be tolerant of his spelling problems though. College degrees didn't do much for my spelling either. I got through freshman english by taking the class at a trade school. My D work in a more ordinary community college was good enough for a B there. My AS didn't help. My #@$%! in Business didn't help, and my MBA didn't help.

I guess that I should have said Bachelor of Science. I guess maybe that isn't so far off though, as many claim that college is just a bunch of #@$%! anyway. MS=more of the same. PHD=piled higher and deeper.

From the last few car and bike dealerships I've visited...I can safely say that they guy is telling the truth.
He toght them with persistence, and they learnt well.

The great thing about the controversy of 5w20 is that many police dept's and cities/counties use it in their Ford products. Great testing ground.

I do believe 5w20 was picked up by auto makers specifically due to fuel savings. Bill Ford (before he got the boot) made some "bold moves" to make Ford a more "green" company. Which ironically may have cost him his job. Having said that, it appears that while 5w20 may have been picked up as a fuel savings measure, it turned out to be a pretty decent oil as well.

I've seen a few reports of police cruisers and other vehicles that have gone 100K with 5w20, but i have yet to see any reports of people making 200-300K. Just not enough time since it was widely introduced. I will be eagerly awaiting the results to see if in fact it turns out to be as good as some thicker oils in extreame high mileage applications. I suspect it will.

I have been impressed by the results some have posted with 5w20 use (Specifically motorcraft 5w20) in some Ford V8/V10 Turbo-Deisel engines.

Do you actually believe that all calls don't go thru Bill Ford first? That Boeing guy may have been brought in to turn the Company around. But Mr. Ford is still running the show. The reason why the change was made is because Ford Motor Company is losing money hand over fist. Which is very sad. It is because of perceived product quality. Not because the company is more environmentally friendly.

FWIW Today I saw a guy with a totally rusted out Honda Civic with 179,800 on the clock getting his oil changed. He runs only 5w20 synthetic (he was getting PP) and changes every 20-30k "whether it needs it or not". The engine sounded fine...the rest of the car was a disaster.

Does GM spec 5W20 for anything yet?

The Saturn Vue that had the Honda engine.

For what it is worth. I am currently running Mobil 1 0W-20 in my 98 Lumina 3.1 V6 with 146,000 miles on it. The Mobil 1 0W-20 has the yellow tag that says 0W-20, & I found it at walmart. It also says:
Quote:

-Provides outstanding engine protection and fuel economy for newer vehicles including Hybrids.
- Reduces friction resulting in the best fuel economy of any Mobil 1 viscosity

I bought it because it has been in the single digits during the day, and less than 0 at night. I wanted the best COLD flowing oil I could find.

Jeez, Stainless, in a GM V6, pushrods, 0W20, aren't you inviting disaster?

Ummmm, shoot.

I haven't been here long enough to know if you are making a joke, or if you are serious. I ummmmm, don't really know.

Is that bad?

No way Stainless. I bet it starts right up like it's 80 degrees out! I don't think I'd choose it for summer, but it's fine for the super cold you guys are seeing right now.

Toocrazy's just being sarcastic.
