After seeing all the viruses and trojans, you should have installed Ubuntu. He's a definite candidate for it!

So he can blame me for his games not working? I don't think so.

It's got SP3 on it and all the updates and a decent virus-scanner now so he should be set.

Besides I'm thinkin' now next time is a billable call.

Several coworkers and a couple of my wife's friends used to think of me as their "on-call" computer technician. After spending many hours, and even entire weekends trying to correct their computer issues, I started telling everyone that I had no clue what was causing their issues. Instead, I would refer them to the Geek Squad or the OEM. If they persisted I would offer to install Linux on their computer, which no one ever took me up on.

The vast majority of the time I found spyware, adware and viruses from their kids using P2P networks. Expired trial anti-virus programs from when these computers were new seemed to be the norm. I also found several infected computers that contained a lot of temporary internet files and cookies from porno sites. This was awkward, especially when I knew that it had been the husband that visited these sites. Happily, no one calls me for computer help anymore.

I don't mind to do it for a "thank-you" or when not being "used" but I just felt that after spending an entire day on the computer, that's the least the kid could have done instead of acting spoiled.

Community and helping others is part of me, but I'm not one for being used/abused either.

Tell the kid that he has to stay with you while you are fixing it so he can learn how to fix it the next time. If he has to give his time he might have a different attitude. If he tells you he does not have time then you should tell him to come back when he does. If he wants his computer fixed he will make time and see first hand how much work and time it takes.

I get asked to fix things frequently. If it takes a while to fix, I asked them to hang around in case I need help, or to ask questions. If the attitude is they don't have the time or don't want to be bothered, then my reply is if it's not that important to them, then its obviously of less importance to me. But they seem to go away when I tell them a Ben Franklin gets my attention.

Next time go fix it over there. On their dining room table. Make the kid make you a sandwich and keep bringing you ice teas and stuff. Turn on the stereo to old fogey music, say it helps you think.

I'm stuck in a loop of fixing my co-worker's always neglected sunfire. For a year he said "it stutters in the rain", I tell him he needs plugs and wires. Every 3 or 4 months he then comes back to me, "do you think it needs an air filter?"

I didn't want to touch the plugs figuring they're siezed in pretty good.

It rains hard enough so his car doens't start and I do his plugs & wires last week on the side of the road. When it started and purred smoother than it had in a long time, the look on his face made me think he thinks I'm some kind of elite wizard. Might be why we keep doing this.

BTW I tell him his battery's shot and he can get a new one for free under warranty if he goes in and has it tested. We'll see.

I'm too nice for that, but you did make me laugh!

Why did they give your dad a car if they are financially tight on money ?

Most kids now or days have ZERO idea the value of a dollar and what in needed to make it..... they just want to spend it

My dad's carvan with over 300K KM on it, has a body that has cancerous rust and it's almost at the point of being unsafe.

My dad being the frugal cheap-wad that he is decided to start looking for another one in the meantime. Price has to be right considering he only paid $100 for this one and drove it over 100K KM

He had a coffee one day with the neighbour and they were talking about it. (before they lost their jobs)

And a few days later the van was in our driveway with the ownership signed and left between the doors.

My dad started fixing it up and 2 months later they lost their jobs. They already replaced the car with a used Honda Accord.

The Ford needed some work like brakes, coolant flush etc. and it was at 276K KM on it when they gave it to my dad so in their mind it wasn't worth the cost to have it all done.

So it turns out we are having problems with it starting and killing the battery overnight (as posted in another thread) so it would have been a nightmare for them anyways.

My dad has driven a lot of this "Garbage" and saved a lot of money so he could buy his own "Treasure".

Smart man my dad!
